Non-lead ammunition
supplies still lacking
on gun dealers shelves
By JIM MATTHEWS
Outdoor News Service
While
manufacturers scramble to meet the California dema nd
for non-lead big game and varmint hunting ammunition mandated in the
range of the California condor, most dealer’s shelves throughout
Southern California still are inadequately stocked with a range of
ammunition. The ban goes into effect July 1, and big game hunting
seasons open as early as August 9 for deer in the huge coastal A zone.
“We still have some Federal Triple Shock and MRX ammunition that we
began stocking last year, but we’re still waiting for our orders for
this fall,” said Nabor Mascorro with Turner’s Outdoorsman, a chain of 13
retail guns and hunting stores throughout Southern California.
At Bass Pro Shops in Rancho Cucamonga, there were aisle end caps filled
with the new Winchester E-Tip (copper) Supreme ammunition in popular 30
caliber rounds, and like Turner’s, Bass Pro also had limited supplies of
Federal ammunition loaded with Barnes Triple-Shock copper bullets. Shoot
the Moon Outfitters in Paso Robles, a gun shop on the Central Coast in
the heart of the lead-ban area, had good supplies of Federal loads with
copper bullets, but just in the most popular calibers.
Virtually none of the stores had supplies of non-lead rimfire
ammunition, and none of the major makers have announced standard .22
rimfire, the most popular round for varmint and pest control. Rumors are
that .22 Long Rifle non-lead ammunition may not be generally available
until next year.
Federal-CCI is just starting to ship the new TNT Green .22 Winchester
Magnum rimfire ammunition, and Winchester was recently testing its
prototype .22 magnum ammo on the Tejon Ranch. Yet, neither company was
willing to announce when the most popular rimfire ammunition -- .22 Long
Rifle and .17 Hornady Magnum Rimfire (HMR) -- would be available.
“We were completely blind-sided by the rimfire ban,” said one company
executive, who asked not to be named. “The California legislature only
banned centerfire ammunition within condor range, and only for big game
and varmint hunting. While we didn’t care for the move, it was something
we could live with as far as getting product to the market. But then the
Fish and Game Commission also banned rimfires for varmint hunting –
something we just didn’t expect. We’re scrambling.”
With the ban going into affect July
1, the shooting of ground squirrels by varmint hunters and ranchers will
come to a screeching halt, except for those who have .22 magnum rifles
or who are willing to shoot non-lead centerfire ammunition.
The ban will also affect approximately 25,000 deer hunters in seven of
California’s major “open” deer zones -- D7, D8, D9, D10, D11, D13, and
the bulk of the southern A zone. It will also impact tule elk,
pronghorn, wild hog, and bear hunters in this region. All of these hunters, unless
they shoot common rounds, might have difficultly finding loaded non-lead
big game ammunition. For example, even the .30-30 Winchester, one of the
most popular deer rounds in America, isn’t loaded with non-lead
ammunition by a major manufacturer. Custom loads are available from
several sources, however, just as with many other less-popular
cartridges. However, custom-loaded ammunition is far more expensive.
[For complete information on the different calibers currently available
with non-lead bullets, bullets for muzzleloader hunters, and custom
loaders who can supply non-lead loads for even obscure cartridges and
wildcats, go here.]
The lack of local availability means that many hunters may not have time
to purchase ammunition and sight in their guns with the new product
before the big game seasons open later this year. While the A-zone has
the earliest opening date, all of the other deer zones will open in late
September and early October.
Hunters need to check with local dealers to see if they will be getting
the new ammunition in time for them to test the new bullets through
their rifles. If you shoot oddball stuff, it might be best to start
looking at mail order sources or custom loads right now.
D17 Deer Zone Almost Full:
Tag
sales for the D-zones, which are sold first-come, first-serve, are
already brisk, according to the Department of Fish and Game. Since tags
went on sale early this month, the 500-tag quota D17 zone in the east
Mojave Desert is almost gone. As of Wednesday evening this week, only
110 tags remained. The burro deer zone along the Colorado River -- D12
-- only had 538 tags left in its 1,200 tag quota.
Last year was the first time in California history that a Southern
California first-come, first-serve zone filled before the deer tag
drawing. D17’s tag quota was filled on June 8 last year, and D12 filled
during the tag drawing.
You can get an update on tag sales in first-come, first-serve zones on
the DFG’s web site at this address: http://www.dfg.ca.gov/licensing/biggame/deertagsavailable.html.
The deadline to apply for premium deer tags and other special big game
hunts for elk, pronghorn, and bighorn sheep is June 2.
Carlisle Academy junior shooters giving
shotgun exhibitions at Shooting Sports Fair
NORCO -- One of the most popular events at Raahauge’s Shooting Sports
Fair each year is a crowd-pleasing shotgun shooting exhibition that has
been a fixture at the show since it’s beginning in 1983. This year’s
show will be held June 6-8 at Raahauge’s shooting complex in Prado
Basin.
Over the years, some of the finest shotgun shooters in the world have
given these exhibitions, and while it’s certainly not the most difficult
part of their show, the crowds always delight in the creation of the
“half-acre salad” that has always been a component of all of these
shows.
In the early years, John Satterwhite, an Olympic skeet shooter, was a
fixture at these events, and he was followed by a whole succession of
some of the nation’s best shotgunners, including John Cloherty, Tim
Bradly, Tom Knapp, the U.S. Army shooting team, Jay Braccini, and – of
course – Dan Carlisle, an Olympic bronze medallist in International trap
shooting and world sporting clays champion.
This year, there’s a slightly different twist. Instead of having the
exhibition done by an established trick shooter, the shotgun shooting
exhibition is being conducted by a group of some of the finest junior
shooters in the world.
But don’t think this is going to be like watching a minor league
baseball game.
Jay Braccini, who is going to be the ringmaster and head microphone man
for the juniors’ exhibition, said these young shotgunners are already
some of the most accomplished shooters in the world -- even though none
of them are over 19. All are part of the Carlisle Academy, a juniors’
shotgun teaching program run by Dan Carlisle with assistants like
Braccini who run the different Carlisle Academy locations across the
country.
Young shooters featured at the Sports Fair include Southern Californians
who have been tutored by Carlisle and Braccini since they were -- in
some cases -- barely old enough to hold a shotgun. They include:
Justin Fox, a 17-year-old from Chino Hills, who currently is the No. 1
sporting clays junior shooter in the nation. An All-American team
shooter, Fox was formerly the top sub-junior National Sporting Clays
Association All-American and he was named this year as Safari Club
Junior Hunter of the Year.
Jennifer Bandy, a 19-year-old Dartmouth student from Walnut, is on the
National Scholastic shotgun team and has been on the junior All-American
team multiple times and is already considered one of the top female
shotgun shooters in the nation.
Katie Fox, Justin’s 16-year-old sister, is the junior ladies’ National
Champion in NSCA, but she may not make the Sports Fair for the
exhibitions because she’s also a nationally-ranked competitor in rodeo.
Braccini said there are a total of 12 young shooters in the Academy, and
all of them are accomplished shotgunners who can perform most of the
same shotgun tricks those who’ve attended the show in the past have
watched performed by the world’s best shotgunners -- proof these kids
are up snuff.
But Braccini says this shotgun exhibition will have something very
different than past shows.
“We’re going to have these kids create one of the biggest and fastest
half-acre salads you’ve ever seen,” laughed Braccini. “In fact, it will
be like nothing you’ve ever seen before.”
While the Carlisle Academy shooters will not be giving a presentation on
Friday – most of them have finals that day – they will be giving shows
at noon and 3 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday.
Show hours and prices for this year's Shooting Sports Fair are from noon
to 6 p.m. Friday, June 6, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, June 7, and 10
a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 8. Admission to the show is $12 for adults
