Eastern Sierra trout season
opener
slower than normal, but still good
By JIM MATTHEWS
Outdoor News Service
MAMMOTH LAKES – Crowds were down throughout the Eastern Sierra Nevada
for the opening of trout season this past weekend, but those who braved
near-$4 per gallon gasoline and made the trip found exceptional weather
conditions and generally fair to good fishing at most locations. Most,
however, noted that the action was not as good as most openers.
The largest trout reported opening day was a nine-pound, 15-ounce
rainbow trout caught by Mike Martinez of Moreno Valley at 5:30 a.m. from
the south shore of Convict Lake.
“We had the largest fish caught in the county,” said Brian Balarsky at
the Convict Lake Resort. “In fact we saw so many full stringers of five
and six pounds rainbows we couldn’t keep track.”
The word got out about the good fishing at Convict, and it was one of
the most crowded locations in the region – outside of Crowley Lake.
Crowley Lake, as usual, was the focal point of the trout opener with
over 700 boats passing through the quagga mussel inspection stations in
Bishop and at Crowley Lake. According to Mike Morrison, a Department of
Fish and Game biologist in Bishop, Crowley was stocked with more trout
than normal last year (over 600,000 fish), but the fishing results were
slightly off from the 2007 opener.
“The catch rate was a little lower than previous years, but we’re seeing
a lot of good-looking fish in the creel,” said Morrison.
Anglers put one fish on the stringer for every two hours of fishing
effort at Crowley and the average size was 1.3 pounds – off from the
1.7-pound average last year. Of the 408 anglers surveyed by the DFG,
most averaged catching two trout each.
The biggest fish posted opening day at Crowley was an eight-pound,
eight-ounce brown trout caught by Mike Pickler of Bishop. The winner of
the Crowley Lake Fish Camp derby was David Buckman of Crowley Lake who
landed a seven-pound 14 1/2-ounce brown trout.
In the June Lake loop, the “opener was quite good,” according to John
Logue at Ernie’s in June Lake. But he said the fishing slowed down on
Sunday and winds through the middle part of the week have kept the
fishing slow to fair since.
The biggest trout landed in the loop was a nine-pound, 14-ounce rainbow
caught in June Lake by Troy Miller of Big Pine, while Scott Olafason of
Garden Grove landed a nine-pound, four-ounce rainbow from Gull Lake. The
top stringer opening day in the loop was a five-fish catch that weighed
in at 16-pounds, nine-ounces caught in June by Kurt Jurado of Canyon
Country.
Some of the best fishing in the Eastern Sierra Nevada took place on the
East Walker River out of Bridgeport where fly anglers had very good
fishing on brown and rainbow trout, according to Scott Freeman, a
fishing guide with Ken’s Sporting Goods in Bridgeport.
“I’ve been fishing the East Walker since March 5th, and I haven’t seen a
fish caught in there less than 15 inches yet this year,” said Freeman.
“Most days you’ll get one or two fish over 20-inches.”
Bridgeport Reservoir produced the best trout in northern Mono County
with a 6 3/4-pound brown caught by Patty Bentley of Gardnerville, Nev.,
the biggest trout opening weekend. Freeman said Brideport produced a lot
of brown trout from two to four pounds, but rainbows in the 14 to
16-inch range and weighing about 1 1/2 pounds made up the bulk of
anglers’ stringers.
While the weather was in the 60s and low 70s at most locations, the high
elevation lakes were still frozen over, and many anglers opted to fish
through the ice.
Mike Neley of Menifee fished Rock Creek Lake with long-time friend Bill
Spice from Santa Rosa and the pair caught limits of trout through the
ice on Saturday, mostly fishing Kastmasters or nightcrawlers. Neley said
that of their 10 trout, eight of them were over two pounds each. One of
Spice’s trout was a 6.35-pound rainbow that was the biggest trout
weighed in at Tom’s Place opening day.
“Over the last 50 years, I’d guess I’ve been to 40 openers,” said Neley.
“There’s nothing like it.”
One of the best overall catches opening weekend was a five-fish stringer
of rainbows put together by Bryan Friedman of Walnut. The young angler
is the owner of Lip RipperZ, a company that makes trout jigs, plastics,
and spoons, and his catch weighed in at 18.4 pounds – over a three-pound
average. Four of his big trout were caught at Twin Lakes in Mammoth,
including his best fish at five pounds, and one other 4 3/4-pound fish
was landed at Intake II on Bishop Creek.
“It was one of the finest days of fishing in the Sierra I’ve ever seen,”
said Friedman of the hot bite in the open water at Twin Lakes. He and
his four fishing buddies caught 25 trout that weighed in at just over 75
pounds total. They also released at least 10 other quality fish.
“We were thankful to have been a part of it,” said Freidman.
Regular gas was just under $4 a gallon in Bishop and more remote
locations like Lee Vining and Bridgeport were charging $4.20-plus for
regular unleaded. By Sunday, many business owners were talking about how
crowds were much lighter this opening day than in past years.
“There’s nobody here now and even over the weekend I’d say the crowds
were down,” said Gary Gunsolley, owner of Brock’s in Bishop on
Wednesday. “Maybe it’s because the fly-fishing guys can come up
year-around and fish Hot Creek and the Upper Owens, but it’s been slow.”
One of the few exceptions to the “fewer” people mantra was Dale Miller
at Mac’s Sporting Goods in Bishop.
“It was a good opener, and I don’t think we had fewer people than last
year – which really surprised me with fuel prices and everything,” said
Miller. “The fishing was good and the weather was even better. Fishermen
just have to come to the Sierra. It’s the opener.”
