Is Crowley Lake’s trout fishery better than it’s ever
been?
By JIM MATTHEWS
Outdoor News Service
Crowley Lake has always been the focal point of the trout season opener
in the Eastern Sierra Nevada, but there were at lot of years when it
wasn’t where you could catch the most or the biggest trout. It was
always good, but it wasn’t necessarily the best place to be opening day,
or any other day during the season.
But when the season opens this year on Saturday, April 26, Crowley will
again be the focal point for some 8,000 to 10,000 anglers heading to the
region to fish beneath snow-draped mountains and breath thin air for the
first time since November. More importantly, it may just be the best
place to fish in the whole Eastern Sierra today.
For years, Crowley Lake had a reputation with fishery biologists has
being a black hole for rainbow trout. The Department of Fish and Game
would plant the lake with a half-million rainbows each year. Anglers
would catch them by the boat load, and the trout not caught would never
hold over more than one season. Rainbows over 16 inches and 1 1/2 pounds
were almost never caught.
It baffled the biologists. The relative handful of brown trout planted
in the lake in those years through the 1960s, 70s and early 80s grew to
monumental proportions. Browns that weighed 10 to 20 pounds were caught
each year -- but never any quality rainbows. When the brown trout plants
stopped (after the whirling disease outbreak at the Mt. Whitney Fish
Hatchery that led to the destruction of the Whitney strain of browns),
the Crowley Lake fishery consisted of pan-sized rainbows and nothing
else.
Then the DFG began experimenting with different strains of rainbow
trout, and in recent years, cutthroat trout have been added into the
mix. Even brown trout are being planted again.
The results have been nothing short of spectacular. Over the last
several seasons, rainbow trout from three to six pounds and pushing 25
or 26 inches have been caught regularly, especially during the late
summer-fall special regulation season when most anglers catching and
releasing fish. These are mostly the big Eagle Lake strain of rainbows.
The cutthroats and brown trout are still relatively newcomers, but as
they continue to have a chance to age and more are added to the lake,
the super trophy component of Crowley is coming back. Brown trout over
10 pounds have been caught the last two years.
Joe Contaldi of Performance Anglers, a guide service and tackle shop in
Mammoth Lakes, said he believes there will be a “couple of fish over 30
inches caught this year.”
“I’m really excited about the way the Lahontan cutthroat trout have
taken a solid hold in Crowley,” said Contaldi. “I had one client land a
25-inch cutt that weighed a solid seven or eight pounds last year.
They’ve proven to be an amazing part of the fishery, and we’re seeing a
lot of 20 to 24-inch fish. I had a lot guys tell me stories of hooking
fish that never saw once. They’re just gone. Those are the cutties.”
The DFG plants Crowley with at least 400,000 trout each year, frequently
more, and the number of brown trout and cutthroat are frequently
determined more by availability in DFG hatcheries than what the DFG
staff would like to plant. The DFG fish are usually planted as sub-catchable-sized
fish (four to six inches) in the fall, and they grow to 12 to 13 inches
by opening day on the rich natural food base in Crowley.
There have also been plants from private hatcheries in Crowley in recent
seasons. These fish are frequently stocked as quality fish right off
bat, and those that hold over learn to each perch minnows and really
pack on the weight.
The fishery has never been better, and it looks like it will keep
getting better in the foreseeable future. While fishing at Crowley for
the opener is and always has been a social event as much as a fishing
trip, anglers who have been coming here for decades can sit around the
evening campfires and tell their grandchildren they are living the good
ol’ days right now.
Trout Opener Ice Updates:
Just a
month ago, forecasters were suggesting that the Eastern Sierra Nevada
would still be locked in ice for the trout season opener April 26. In
the 30-plus years I’ve followed or attended the opener, I can’t remember
a single year when Crowley Lake was still locked in ice. There were a
couple of times it was close and there was shoreline ice and big sheets
of thin ice floating over the main body of the lake, but never
walk-across-it-solid. Never unfishable-solid.
The ice has been gone nearly three weeks now at Crowley.
The higher elevation waters are always a crap shoot. The Bishop Creek
drainage lakes, especially North Lake, are usually frozen. This year
North, South, and Sabrina are all still mostly ice-covered, but the wind
and sunny weather could open up a lot of water on South Lake and Sabrina
by opener.
The Mammoth Lakes are rarely open, and they will all probably solid this
year. Only the Twin Lakes are likely to have any open water, with Mary,
Mamie, and George all likely to be solid enough for ice fishing.
In the June Lake Loop, Gull and Silver are frequently frozen frozen for
the opener, but this year all the loop waters are open, with Grant and
June completely ice-free, and Gull and Silver losing what little ice is
left rapidly. Lundy Lake is frequently mostly frozen, but it is very low
(only hand-launchable boats will be allowed because the ramp ends above
the water level) this year and mostly ice free now. Virginia Lake are
always frozen, but the road will be plowed and they will be open to ice
fishing this year. The Twin Lakes out of Bridgeport haven’t been solid
in a number of years, and they are also both open already this year.
The Ultimate Eastern Sierra Fish Report:
Performance Anglers in Mammoth Lakes has taken
Eastern Sierra fishing reports to a completely new level. Joe Contaldi
does weekly reports on the store’s web site (www.performanceanglers.com)
in print and video. His weekly video reports show the waters being
covered and the top flies, lures, baits and tactics to use to catch fish
there. It’s like watching the Evening News, only about fishing the
Eastern Sierra.
