Potential record flathead
catfish caught and eaten
By JIM MATTHEWS
Outdoor News Service
Rafael
Terrones is an admitted fishaholic. The San Bernardino angler spends
most weekends in the Palo Verde Valley along the Colorado River fishing
the large irrigation drainage ditches for flathead catfish.
It’s a five year old addiction, and he says he can’t get enough of the
big catfish.
This past weekend, Terrones’ wrestled -- literally -- a flathead from a
pipe at a road crossing at one of his favorite canals that later weighed
an incredible 73 pounds on a recycling center scale in San Bernardino.
That would make this fish a couple of ounces heavier than the listed
California state record of 72 pounds, 14 ounces caught in 2003, and darn
close to the record (listed by
Arizona) for the largest flathead caught
from Colorado River waters at 74 pounds.
Terrones was cooking the cheeks of the huge flathead on Monday when he
and his wife Diane told the story of the catch.
Terrones baited his big hook with two goldfish. “They were kind of small
so I put two on,” he said. The bait was lowered into the upstream side
of the pipe that funnels water under the road crossing. Diane was
reading when she heard her husband shouting.
“He was down the bank yelling, ‘I got one, I got one.’ And when he gets
the fish out of the drain pipe it looks like a shark,” said Diane
Terrones.
Normally, Terrones can usually drags the hooked fish up the bank with
the 80-pound test line he uses, but this fish was too big, so he crashed
down through the heavy brush and went right into the water to wrestle
the fish up on the bank.
“He got the fish out of the water, but he couldn’t lift it,” said Diane.
She admitted that she wasn’t going down the steep bank to help (she was
thinking about rattlesnakes), so he convinced her to throw him down the
tow rope. With the rope tied to the fish, and Diane pulling from the top
and Rafael pushing and lifting from the bottom, they got the huge fish
up to the road.
Out of breath and excited they sat there looking at the huge catfish
telling each other to breath.
At B&B Bait in Blythe, the fish weighed 65 pounds on that scale.
Terrones had caught a 63-pounder before and this fish seemed a lot
bigger to him. With the fish on ice, they came home and decided to weigh
the fish again. They took the fish to an aluminum recycling center and
weighed the fish on their certified scale and it weighed just over 73
pounds and was 53 inches long.
They thought it might be a record fish, but they were less concerned
about a record than making sure the fish didn’t spoil. So Terrones cut
up big flathead for fish tacos. Besides he knew he was going back to
Blythe this weekend to catch -- perhaps -- an even bigger flathead.
“We’re not full of baloney, we’re full of catfish,” laughed Rafael
Terrones.
MORONS IN THE LEGISLATURE:
How do
people this ignorant get elected? There are three anti-gun bills working
their way through the California legislature that truly show how moronic
some of our state’s legislators can be.
AB 2062 by Kevin DeLeon (D-Los Angeles) would require licensing of
anyone who sells handgun ammunition and a back ground check and
registration of anyone who purchases this ammunition. It would also ban
mail-order sales. Never mind this bill violates a federal law
specifically not allowing background checks and registration of
ammunition buyers. The question is simply, what would it do?
Will it help solve crimes? Since ammunition isn’t traceable, it can’t
possibly help solve any crime. If someone is shot with a 9mm round, will
the DOJ round up everyone who left a thumbprint to purchase 9mm
ammunition and somehow devine which (if) one these people did the deed?
It’s a worthless crime fighting tool. Will it keep ammunition out of the
hands of people who might shoot someone else? No. Since the ammo is
untraceable, a legal low-life buyer could provide ammo to his or her
felon chum. The only thing this bill does is create another costly
bureaucracy, tax gun owners and ammunition sellers needlessly, and allow
the harassment of legitimate handgun owners.
How a thinking person can’t see that makes me wonder about DeLeon’s
mental abilities. On top of everything else, this bill was already
defeated in the California Assembly Public Safety Committee, but DeLeon
has chosen to circumvent legislative rules by reintroducing the bill in
the same session, a move that is costing California taxpayers thousands
upon thousands of dollars.
Oh, and one final thing on DeLeon’s bill. In the legislative analysis of
the bill, it was pointed out that this legislation was supported only by
the usual anti-gun groups, and not a single letter from John Q. Public.
Those opposing the bill included -- of course -- the usual array of
pro-gun groups, but also nearly 2,000 comments from individual handgun
owners who are tired of being treated like criminals.
On to stupid bill No. 2. AB 2566 was authored by Loni Hancock (D-El
Cerrito [Berkeley area]). The bill would override state preemption laws
and allow local governments to shut down law-abiding handgun
manufacturers, distributors and retailers. The way I read the bill, it
would also allow cities and/or counties to ban ownership of handguns.
Under Hancock’s view of Democracy, it’s OK to discriminate against
someone who makes, sells, or owns a completely legal product if you
don’t like it. Since guns and gun owners are bad in her world, she
thinks it should be OK for cities and counties to discriminate against
them -- regardless of what state, federal, and constitutional laws says.
Fortunately this bill failed to pass out of committee on Tuesday.
Lastly, AB 2948 by Mark Leno (D-San Francisco) would ban gun shows at
the Cow Palace in San Francisco. There’s not a shred of evidence that
the big gun show held at the Cow Palace each year is anything but a
legal and highly popular event. Gun shows are already highly regulated
in California and banning them from this public facility would serve
merely to cut local government out of the rental and use fees paid by
the gun show promoters. That’s a bright thing considering the economic
downturn that is affecting all levels of government. Incredibly, this
bill passed out of the same public safety committee that didn’t pass AB
2566.
The fact that we have legislators who introduce bills like this is proof
that prejudice and discrimination are alive and well in America. All
three of these bills are about discriminating against America’s newest
class of “lesser” citizens -- legal gun owners.
