Angler’s Lake
closing to public
the end of April
By JIM MATTHEWS
Outdoor News Service
Angler’s Little Lake is an eight-acre lake surround by giant eucalyptus
trees in an old part of the Hemet Valley where there are still citrus
orchards instead of housing tracts. Since 1972 the fishing lake has been
run by the Hochstetler-Rodriguez family, providing an idyllic break to
an increasingly hectic life just beyond the canopy of fragrant leaves.
The lake is closing to the public, probably permanently, April 30.
“I think they’ve killed the jewell of the valley,” said Scott
Hochstetler.
Ralph Wynn, a Hemet resident who’s fished at Angler’s Lake since the
early 1970s, said he thought the Lake Hemet Municipal Water District,
which owns the lake, was “forgetting about regular people.”
“I don’t think they thought this thing clear because that’s a landmark
out there,” said Wynn. “They just don’t understand the value of the lake
other than water [storage]. But they’ve made up their mind, and I don’t
feel there’s a way we can keep it open.”
Hochstetler, along with his wife Robyn, and a small staff have run the
lake for the past 16 years. The lake was planted with trout through the
winter and early spring and with catfish all summer, and Hochstetler
tried to compete with bigger waters in Orange County by planting big
fish and trying to keep the entry fee to the lake below his competitors.
But the Lake Hemet Municipal Water District cancelled his lease in
April, 2006, and they put the recreation program out to bid. Hochstetler
said only two bids were submitted -- one by a local park district who
wanted to lease the facility for $1 per year, which was rejected, and
the other by a local patron who backed out when he realized the district
could back out of the lease with a registered letter, taking over any
capital improvements made to the property.
Hochstetler agreed to keep the lake open through this April, but he said
the one-sided water district lease proposal has kept him and everyone
else from submitting bids. The easy-out clause precludes anyone from
doing even simple improvements.
“The district basically pulled the plug,” said Hochstetler. “I think
they decided the liability wasn’t worth the effort to keep it open.”
The water district plans to drain the lake, remove the sediment, and
upgrade the pump station so it can recycle the water and pump it back up
for use by agriculture customers above the lake. Hochstetler said the
fluctuating water levels would also impact the fishing experience at the
lake, and probably negatively impact the natural bass and panfish
fishery, too.
Tom
Wagoner, the general manager of the Lake Hemet Municipal Water District,
said the lake would be closed to the public at least through this year
while the work on the lake is completed, "but it could open again in the
future." When the lake is drawn down, probably in the fall, he said the
water district would try to rescue as many fish as possible and move
them to Lake Hemet. Wagoner also said the board was hopeful they could
find a new operator or perhaps have the facility run by a local park
district.
Anglers who’d like to voice their concern over the loss of this local
fishing icon, can attend the next Lake Hemet Municipal Water District
board of directors meeting which will be held 3 p.m., Tuesday, April 8
at the district’s board room, 26385 Fairview Ave., Hemet, CA 92544. For
more information or directions about the meeting, contact Karen
Hornbarger at 951-658-3241. Written comments should be sent to Tom
Wagoner, the general manager, at the same address or you can e-mail
Wagoner at twagoner@lhmwd.org.
BATTLING WINDMILLS:
Gary Hatfield feels like Don Quixote in “Man of
La Mancha.” However, the avid chukar hunter from Mountain Home Village
is battling to stop the building of actual windmills on some of the best
chukar and quail hunting habitat in the West Mojave Desert.
This week the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the county of San
Bernardino have agreed to extend the comment period for the Granite
Mountain Wind Energy Project to May 5. The extension was granted after a
little-noticed public scooping meeting was met with overwhelming public
concern from both residents in surrounding areas and desert users like
Hatfield.
Granite Wind has proposed a huge wind farm on public and private lands
located on the peaks and ridges of the Granite Mountains between Apple
Valley and Lucerne Valley. The proposal would consist of 27 wind
turbines built along more than a mile of ridgeline -- right in the heart
of some of the best chukar hunting in the Granite Mountains.
“This is a spiritual place for me,” said Hatfield, who says the wind
farm would impact hunters, wildlife (including bighorn sheep), off-road
enthusiasts, and desert views for most of the residents in Apple Valley.
Hatfield, who’s not against wind power, suggested the company look for
less environmentally sensitive locations that weren’t on top of peaks.
Sportsmen who’d like more information about the proposed project should
contact Edythe Seehafer with the Barstow field office of the BLM at
760-252-6021.
LEAD EXPOSURE IN HUMANS:
The latest lead buzz in the shooting and hunting industry began last
week when North Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa pulled hunter-donated venison
from food banks over fears of lead contamination from bullet fragments.
A North Dakota doctor, who happens to be an avid hunter, took 100
packages of donated meat and did CT scans on them, and he found 60
percent had traces of lead. The study did not quantify the amount of
lead in the samples or if it was significant enough to be a health
issue. Still, this prompted North Dakota to discard all of the donated
venison, with Minnesota and Iowa announcing they would follow suit.
Then this week Iowa reversed its stand after testing samples of its own
and finding lead in only 20 percent of the packages tested, and not
enough lead in those packages to cause any health concerns even if the
meat were a part of the diet every day. In a survey of human blood data,
Iowa officials said they could not find a single case of lead-related
health problems attributable to bullet lead fragments in wild game.
