San Gabriel Mountains sheep count hampered by
winds, over 100 bighorn still tallied by volunteers
By JIM MATTHEWS
Outdoor News Service
The annual bighorn sheep count in the San Gabriel
Mountains was hampered by high wings this past Saturday and Sunday, but
volunteers, many with the Society for the Conservation of Bighorn Sheep,
along with Department of Fish and Game and U.S. Forest Service staff
still managed to count over 100 sheep despite the windy conditions.
“We literally had some people blown off their feet on some of those
ridges,” said Jeff Villepique, a DFG biologist.
The count is conducted simultaneously from both the air and ground. The
DFG and forest service staff flies in a helicopter doing tallies, while
ground counters on foot go to predetermined locations and make counts
from there. Using this method, the DFG is able to estimate total
population numbers along with determining lamb recruitment (the number
of young surviving) each year.
While the DFG was able to do aerial counts for only about two hours on
Saturday, the winds were blowing so hard on Sunday when the combined
count was to take place, the helicopter could not fly. Villepique said
this would preclude the two agencies from doing a total population
estimate.
“From what we did see, things look pretty good,” said Villepique of the
117 bighorns actually tallied. Even though the sample size was
relatively small, it looked as though the lamb recruitment was again
pretty good, in spite of the drought last year with about 50 lambs per
100 ewes.
Last year, the San Gabriel Mountains population was estimated to be just
over 300 bighorn after the count where 142 animals were counted from the
air and 55 sheep from the ground. There were 62 lambs per 100 ewes, a
record ratio last year.
Over 100 volunteers took part in the survey which focused on the region
from Lytle Creek to the San Gabriel River. The ground counters tallied
66 bighorns on Sunday (versus 55 last year), and Villepique said they
counted 51 sheep from the air during their wind-shortened flight on
Saturday.
The bighorn sheep population in the San Gabriels was once estimated to
have over 740 animals, but the population crashed, dropping to less than
100 sheep. The population has been rebounding the past three years with
steady growth and Villepique said he was hopeful that growth was
continuing.
FRED HALL SHOW ONGOING THROUGH SUNDAY: The Fred
Hall Fishing Tackle and Boat Show is ongoing today through Sunday at the
Long Beach Convention Center. The event has been held on for over 60
years, and it features over 2,000 exhibitors this year. There are also
around 400 seminars during the show.
How many people come to the show? On opening day Wednesday, I was told
by a Turner’s Outdoorsman honcho that during the five days of the event,
the company would sell more fishing tackle than it does at all 13 of its
retail stores combined in over two months. The crowd on Wednesday filled
Turner’s 8,000-plus square foot space almost shoulder-to-shoulder from
about 10 minutes after the show opened until well into the evening.
If you come to Long Beach, stop by for a visit. I’m pedaling hunting
newsletters at a booth right across from Turner’s and next to the
Beretta firearms booth.
Show hours are 2 to 9:30 p.m. today through Friday, 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $15 per person, and
most of the parking around the convention center is in $8 fee lots. For
more information, call 805-389-3339 or go to
www.fredhall.com.
BILLS SUPPORTING A MONOPOLY: Are anti-gun
legislators supporting a monopoly?
Alan Gottlieb, chairman of the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep
and Bear Arms (CCRKBA), is arguing that in virtually all states that
have proposed or passed micro-stamping legislation have done so under
shady circumstances.
“Sponsors of bills that would require coding of cartridge casings and
bullets in their respective states have neglected to mention that there
is only one company in the country with the technology, and that company
has been working with a ‘hired-gun’ consulting firm that offers its help
to lawmakers drafting the legislation,” Gottlieb said.
“Essentially, you have state legislators working as promoters for a
company called Ammunition Coding System, pushing measures in at least 10
states that would mandate the use of this proprietary technology at the
expense of gun owners,” Gottlieb said.
California is one of those states that recently passed such a
requirement.
“Giving one company a legislated monopoly in any other area would bring
down a media firestorm,” Gottlieb said.
Of course, no one in the general California media said “boo” about the
fact the legislation was not only unethical, as Gottlieb points out, but
also completely ineffectual in its supposed intended purpose of fighting
crime.
The real unsaid goal of anti-gun politicians has been to outlaw the sale
of all new model semi-automatic handguns from the California
marketplace. With the current restrictions (cocking and loaded magazine
indicators), no new model has been approved in over a year. With the new
micro-stamping requirement, it will make it highly unlikely that any new
model handgun will ever be approved by the Department of Justice.
Ironically, any company that continues to make a model that was approved
before the recent legislation will continue to be allowed to sell these
guns in California -- even those without microstamping, cocking
indicators, and loaded magazine indicators.
Is it any wonder that our legislature is the laughing stock for the rest
of the country?
