Isabella trout fishing derby
to feature $200,000 in cash
By JIM MATTHEWS
Outdoor News Service
The 20th Annual Isabella Lake Fishing Derby will be held April 4-6, and
this year it features 1,000 tagged trout worth from $20 in cash all the
way up to $20,000. In past years, the top tagged trout was worth
$10,000, but this year there will be 10 trout wearing $10,000 tags and
the new top prize of 20 grand.
“There’s going to be a lot of money swimming around in that lake,” said
Fred Roach, the tournament director. “And we want them all to be
caught.”
Then he chuckled. “If that happened, it might make it more difficult for
us to get insurance in the future -- or the price would sure go up.”
In past years, from 10 to 20 percent of the tagged trout have been
caught during the three-day event held Saturday through Monday. And
twice in the previous 19 years, the $10,000 tagged trout was caught.
Roach said the tournament committee wanted to make a big splash for the
event’s 20th anniversary. At its first meeting last year planning this
year’s derby, Roach suggested they put in 20 fish with $10,000 tags.
“They all looked at me like I was nuts,” he laughed.
But they did end up with half that as 10 local businesses stepped
forward to each buy the insurance for one $10,000 tagged trout, and the
Kern Valley Chamber of Commerce decided to up the top prize and paid the
bill for the $20,000 fish.
Last year, just over 5,000 anglers fished the derby and 116 of the 1,000
tagged fish were caught with the top tag a $500 fish. In 2006, the last
time a $10,000 tagged trout was landed, there were 3,900 anglers in the
event and they landed 311 tagged fish. Those numbers suggest there’s a
good chance at least one of the top prizes will be caught this year, and
probably more than one.
The 1,000 tagged trout are released just prior to the event from four
pontoon boats all over the lake.
In addition, the tournament committee has trout pens where they have
been feeding 13,000 rainbows placed in those pens in November. The trout
have been fed twice a day by a corp of 33 local volunteers and the fish
are now from one to two pounds. All of those fish will be released
before the derby.
The Department of Fish and Game is currently stocking Isabella at least
twice a month and has been all winter, and they usually put in a bonus
load of rainbows before the derby weekend. The first of two 1,200-pound
loads of trophy trout -- Alper’s rainbows from two to three pounds --
was planted Feb. 24th, and the second load will go in the week before
the derby.
As in previous years, it’s not a question of whether entrants will catch
trout, it’s just whether or not any will be tagged fish.
Entry fee is $15 per angler or $35 per family (husband, wife and up to
three kids 15 and under) if registration is before March 15. After that,
the price jumps to $20 per person and $45 per family. Complete rules and
registration forms are available on line at http://derby.kernrivervalley.com/.
Roach said that as of Wednesday this week, they already had about 1,000
early registrations -- about 850 more than last year this time.
San Gabriel Mountains bighorn
population continues to recover
A joint ground and aerial survey of the bighorn sheep population in the
San Gabriel Mountains this past weekend shows the population continues
to recover from near-catastrophic lows in the late 1990s, according to
Jeff Villepique with the Department of Fish and Game.
The survey involved over 100 volunteers who tallied sheep from the
ground, while DFG and U.S. Forest Service staff counted sheep from a
helicopter. The total helicopter count was 202 animals with 50 counted
by ground volunteers. When the last survey was conduced in 2007, there
were 142 sheep counted from the air and 55 from the ground. That year
the DFG was able to estimate the population at 308 animals with a high
degree of confidence in the estimate’s accuracy.
Villepique said they had not crunched the numbers for this year’s count
yet, but he was confident is would show another increase in sheep
numbers.
“I’m guesstimating our population estimates are going to go up,” said
Villepique. “The preliminary numbers are very positive.”
He said the San Gabriel herd was once one of the largest and most
healthy wild sheep herds in the West, with over 700 animals roaming
throughout the range in the late 1970s and early 1980s. But the
population crashed to around 100 animals or less from 1995 through 2002
and some biologists were concerned that we could lose the whole
population of sheep.
While there are still segments of the population that have not recovered
as well as in other areas, the sheep seem to be responding to recent
burns, which improve the habitat, with better lamb production and
survival.
Villepique said the helicopter crew saw one of the largest sheep groups
ever reported in the San Gabriels when they counted 40 animals in a
single burn area in the wilderness along the East Fork of the San
Gabriel River.
He said they also saw a big cinnamon-colored black bear and “some really
nice bucks” during the flights.
These surveys have been done almost continuously since 1976, but the
volunteer ground component has returned again just during the last three
counts. The ground counting, done in conjunction with the aerial survey,
gives wildlife biologists much more accurate population estimates and
higher total counts with which to make those estimates.
Shotgun shooting lessons
available from Dan Carlisle
Some call him the shotgun whisperer. Anyone can break clay targets with
Dan Carlisle over their shoulder teaching simple techniques while
offering encouragement, advice and admonishments.
Carlisle, arguably one of the most versatile and successful competitive
shotgun shooters in history, is giving a series of 1 1/2-hour shotgun
shooting lessons from March 12-17 at Mike Raahauge’s Shooting
Enterprises in Norco.
Carlisle has excelled on both the national and international stage in
all major shotgun shooting disciplines, winning the national titles in
sporting clays (all three associations), American trap, American skeet,
international trap shooting, and international skeet shooting. He’s been
an international trapshooting world champion, a gold medalist in the Pan
American Games in international trap, and a world champ in international
skeet.
This across-discipline mastery of the shotgun has made Carlisle one of
the most coveted shotgun coaches in the nation, and in 2008 he coached
the
American 2008 Olympic trap and Olympic doubles trap teams to gold
medals. He spends a large portion of his time today coaching junior
shotgun shooters, and many of these young shooters have claimed national
and international junior titles in the past three years.
For information on costs of these lessons and time slots available, call
Raahauge’s at 951-735-7981.
