Fred Hall Show opens next
Wednesday for five-day run at
Long Beach Convention Center

The unofficial kick off of the spring fishing season is the Fred Hall
Fishing Tackle and Boat Show held at the Long Beach Convention Center
each year. This year’s event runs from next Wednesday, March 4, through
Sunday, March 8, and it marks the 63rd season the Hall family has put on
this event.
The show will be one of the largest in the event’s history with more
than 3,000 exhibits and more seminars and exhibitions that you could
possibly attend even if you came all five days of the event. It’s like a
live encyclopedia of fishing. From fishing destinations around the
world, to gear and tackle for all types of fishing, to kayaks,
sportfishers, and bass boats, if it has anything to do with fishing, you
can find it at this event.
The show always seems to fall just as all of the local freshwater and
saltwater bites are shaking off the lethargy of winter and kicking into
high gear, and this event builds excitement for the upcoming fishing
season.
In fact, it is difficult to find a Southern California angler who has
not been to this show, and for many, it is an annual ritual of spring.
My advice: Pick up a copy of this week’s Western Outdoor News for
complete coverage of the show, its exhibitors, speakers, and seminars so
you can plan your Hall trip.
For those of you who don’t already have it on the calendar, this is your
reminder.
CORONA LAKE CRANKS OUT LAKE RECORD RAINBOW: Steve Weitzeil of Murrieta
and his grandson Donald teamed up to land a 24 1/2-pound rainbow trout
at Corona Lake this past Friday. It is the largest caught in Southern
California during this winter’s trout season, and the catch ties the
Corona Lake record set in April, 2003, by Dennis Lovenburg of Corona,
who also landed a 22 1/2-pound trout the same day he caught his record
fish.
Besides the lake record, there was also a 19 1/2-pound rainbow caught at
Corona Lake by Nick Johnson of Riverside, and there is more than an
outside chance that more huge trout will be caught at Corona Lake and
its sister water in Orange County, Santa Ana River Lakes.
A pair of post-Fred Hall Show promotions at these two lakes will feature
plants of huge 20- to 30-pound rainbows from Mt. Lassen Trout Farms in
Northern California. The four-day fishing blowouts are set for March
19-22 and April 2-5.
“The goal is to have the state record broken here. Again,” said Craig
Elliott with Corona Lake and Santa Ana River Lakes.
The current state record is a 28-pound, five-ounce fish caught from a
private lake in Butte County in 2006. Before that, the record was a
28.1-pound rainbow caught by Mike Lopez of Paramount at Santa Ana River
Lakes in 2005.
DFG BUDGET DODGES LOOTING: Thanks to efforts by a couple of sportsmen’s
groups and angry phone calls from hunters and anglers across the state,
the politicians in Sacramento didn’t raid the Department of Fish and
Game’s budget to the tune of $30 million, as proposed by the Governor.
That move would also have cost the DFG budget another $30 million in
lost federal money.
Can we celebrate? Only if we can get the agency to spend those hunting
and license fee dollars on game and sportfish instead of diverting it to
non-game or threatened plant work that has no funding.
Don’t hold your breath. Sportsmen lose the money either way in this
state.
SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY PARKS TROUT DERBIES: The annual trout derby held
at Prado Regional Park this past Saturday attracted over 550 anglers
from throughout Southern California. The top fish was a nine-pound,
12-ounce rainbow caught by Henry Fabela of Pomona, and it netted Fabela
a $500 Turner’s Outdoorsman gift certificate.
This event is one of five derbies held at each of the county parks
during the trout season each year. These events feature a truck-load of
prizes for the biggest fish landed and entry fee is $15. There are two
more of these events left this season. Mojave Narrows Regional Park in
Victorville will have its derby March 14th, and the first place winner
here will win a $1,200 cruise. The last derby of the season will be held
April 4th at Cucamonga Guasti Regional Park in Ontario. For more

BRASH PREDICTION: During the five days before and including the new and
full moons in March, I’m predicting there will be more largemouth bass
over 15 pounds caught in Southern California -- most from Diamond Valley
Lake -- than have been caught in many years.

FEBRUARY 28 LAKE SUTHERLAND TURKEY TUNE-UP: The San Diego Chapter of the
National Wild Turkey Federation will be hosting it’s annual turkey
tune-up at Lake Sutherland from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 28. The
event will feature a drawing for the public Lake Sutherland turkey hunts

MARCH 7 QUAIL UNLIMITED GUN DOG SHOWDOWN: The 21st Annual Gun Dog
Showdown will be held beginning 7:30 a.m., Saturday, March 7 at the
Prado Dog Training Area just off Euclid Avenue at the 71 freeway, Chino.
Hosted by the San Gabriel Valley Chapter of Quail Unlimited, there is a
$65 registration fee, with reruns $55. There is also a $10 park entrance
fee. The event pits pointing dogs against flushing breeds in a fun

Water-for-Wildlife Volunteer Group will have a guzzler repair project in

bring camping gear, water, firewood, food or lunch and snacks, and
