On the verge of buying a turkey
hunting vest, for other purposes

I’m becoming increasingly enamored with turkey hunting vests. This time of year, all the “spring” outdoor catalogs begin arriving, and the turkey vest pages just seem to jump out at me.
It’s the features.
I’m getting to the age where all of my outdoor activities are best tackled with a multi-pocketed vest that can hold all the gear I might need. In fact, I’m thinking that I’d wear one all the time when I’m out of the house.
First, there’s an attached sitting pad made of thick foam. This in itself is worth the price of admission. In spite of having more padding on my own seat than ever before, I can’t sit on the ground very long any more. I feel the rocks and roots, and I get cold. My legs fall asleep. With a pad, a lot of those problems go away. I can also see utility of this feature when I have to go to the mall with Becky and spend time sitting on those hard benches waiting for her while she shops. Best of all, it folds up behind your back when you’re not using it.
Then there’s a big back pocket. All turkey vests have these. Ostensibly this is where you stash your turkey after you cluck him into shotgun range. But it’s also a good place to put a sweater or jacket, extra socks in case I get wet, and an extra hat. I lose a lot of hats these days. Maybe I’d throw in some light raingear, too. (I’d add extra underwear in case I have an accident, but I’m not sure that would make it into the newspaper – and did I mention that this pocket is usually lined for easy cleaning.)
Lots of big pockets all over the front of the vest are a real plus. I can put in my sunglasses, reading glasses, and computer glasses, sunscreen, lotion, an extra hanky, toilet paper, a magnifying glass, binoculars, a couple of knives, a multi-purpose tool, a flashlight, GPS unit, and digital camera. There’s a special inside pocket for one of those weekly medicine holders, the ones about the size of a pen.
If I’m actually hunting or fishing, the pockets can also hold calls, ammunition, flies or lures, an extra reel, leader material, bait, scent, or whatever else I might toss in. There’s a lot of room.
Lastly, all turkey vests have a big blaze orange flap you can drape over the back and shoulders of the vest. This is really handy. I won’t say I get lost these days, but this feature just makes it easier for my wife and kids to find me when I wander off – either in the mall or in the field – and it does tell other hunters not to take potshots at you, no matter how badly you call.
For years, I’ve had a “go bag” that I just grab and throw in the truck whenever I leave the house. I’m thinking a “go vest” makes more sense: then I have everything with me all the time – not back in the truck. I figure I won’t even notice the extra 15 or 20 pounds (I certainly don’t notice the extra 40 I’m carrying now).
When I pointed out some turkey vests to my boys in a catalog this week and told them all of the things I’d put into the pockets, one rolled his eyes, “My God, you’re turning into such as old man.”
I was pretty sure they didn’t see me comparing the dimensions of the box call pocket with my slippers – which I really like wearing when I’m driving.
Then the other one added: “Does the vest have a pocket that will accommodate your nose and ear hair trimmer?”
You know, next year this time, when the catalogs start coming, I might not care what they think anymore and just order one.

FEBRUARY 15 REGISTRATION FOR BIGHORN SHEEP COUNT: Volunteers are needed for the annual bighorn sheep count in the San Gabriel Mountains on March 2. Conducted jointly by the Department of Fish and Game, U.S. Forest Service, and several conservation groups, the comprehensive count relies on ground-based volunteers throughout the range and government crews in helicopter. The count provides the agencies with accurate population data on the sheep to help management. There is a mandatory orientation meeting on March 1 for all volunteers. FEBRUARY 15-18 GREAT BACKYARD BIRD COUNT: The 11th annual Great Backyard Bird Count will be held across the nation Feb. 15-18, and volunteers are encouraged to participate. Participants send in a checklist of the birds they tally at a specific location -- from your backyard to a local park to a favorite hiking location. Last year, there were 80,000 checklists submitted, identifying over 613 species and 11 million birds. The data is used to identify population trends, migration areas and timing, and range expansion or shrinkage. FEBRUARY 16 NWTF-LAKE SUTHERLAND TURKEY TUNE-UP: The San Diego County Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation, along with the City of San Diego and the California Department of Fish and Game, are hosting the annual Turkey Tune-Up at Lake Sutherland 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 16. There will be a drawing for the 22 turkey hunts at Lake Sutherland, calling seminars, where-to-hunt information, calling contest, raffle, and shotgun and archery range practice. FEBRUARY 16-17 WATER-FOR-WILDLIFE WORK PROJECT: The Mojave Preserve Water-for-Wildlife Volunteer Group will have a guzzler repair project and campout in the Cedar Canyon area of the Mojave National Preserve Feb. 16-17. Repairs will be made to two small game guzzlers and a final coat of Merlex applied to a third drinker. Everyone should bring camping gear, water, firewood, food, and gloves. MARCH 8 QUAIL UNLIMITED GUN DOG SHOWDOWN: The San Gabriel Valley Chapter of Quail Unlimited is hosting its 20th annual Gun Dog Showdown beginning 7:30 a.m., Saturday, March 8, at the Prado Regional Park Dog Training Area, Chino. The event is open to all hunting breeds and will feature planted chukar. Hunter-dog teams will be scored on time and shells expended to shoot and retrieve all three birds. MARCH 8 BALD EAGLE CENSUS: Volunteers are needed for the winter census of bald eagles at Big Bear Lake, Lake Arrowhead, Silverwood Lake, and Lake Hemet on Saturday, March 8. Counts are conducted the same day and same times at all four waters. Volunteers need to bring binoculars, a watch, and wear warm clothes.
