JIM
MATTHEWS’
PICKS OF THE WEEK
1. The
wide open largemouth and striper action at Diamond Valley Lake has
continued this week, and the rainbow trout bite is matching the bass
bites. The DFG plants of subcatchable brown trout turned on the bass and
stripers and the fish are still looking for this candy. Best baits are
big, trout-like topwater and swim baits to catch quality largemouth to
six pounds and stripers to 16 pounds. For breaking updates, check with
the marina staff at 951-926-7201 or Last Chance Bait & Tackle in Hemet
at 951-658-7410. You can also get more information on the lake at
www.dvmarina.com.
2. There continues to be a good bluegill bite at Lake Perris. The action
has been on crickets off the marina docks and fish to a pound or better
have been showing. This bite is likely to sour with cooler weather, so
you might want to hit it before things change too much. Don’t forget you
can fish off some of the marina docks for just $3. For an update on this
bite, check with the marina staff at 951-657-2179.
3. Road trip? Call ahead to make sure the big trout were planted here,
but the Buena Vista Lakes trout derby is this Saturday and there are
always a bunch of whopper Mt. Lassen Trout Farms rainbows over 10 pounds
planted for this event, and the fishing pressure is less here on derby
weekend than comparable waters in Orange County on ANY weekend. Also far
fewer talented finesse jig anglers fish here. A good angler can slay
them. Call Bob’s Bait for information at 661-833-8657.
FRESHWATER HOT SPOTS
TROUT: Santa Ana River Lakes, Corona Lake, and Hesperia Lake are all
excellent with their trout seasons now in full swing. All three are also
getting Nebraska Tailwalkers this season. Irvine Lake is also very good
with browns, rainbows, brookies, and steelhead all showing in a good
bite. Diamond Valley has a good bite, after another plant last week, for
shore anglers and trollers working out of rental boats, but light
fishing pressure now that the lake is closed to private launching. The
lake record for trout fell twice at DVL this past week. Buena Vista
Lakes near Taft in the southern San Joaquin Valley has its annual derby
Saturday. Lots of big fish planted. Most waters in SoCal are getting
trout plants now or will get them soon. In the Western Sierra, the upper
and lower stretches of the Kern River remain very good, both seeing some
of the best fishing of the year.
LARGEMOUTH BASS: There is generally fair to good fall bass action across
the region. Casitas, Perris, and Diamond Valley Lake are all good in
about that order of preference, with big fish starting to show after DFG
trout plants at all three. Castaic, Pyramid, Silverwood, Cachuma,
Isabella, Skinner, Piru, Otay, and Wohlford all have fair to good
action. Poway, and El Capitan are a little slower.
STRIPED BASS: Castaic cranked out a few big fish two weeks ago, but that
bite seemed to go in the tank. Silverwood and Skinner have been good on
smaller fish, while Pyramid is just fair. Diamond Valley also has some
good striper boils going on and fish to 18 pounds were reported this
week. On the Colorado River, the best striper action has been the fair
to good bite in Mead where a lot of smaller fish to three pounds
showing. Havasu and Mojave are also fair on smaller fish.
PANFISH: Top bets for bluegill and redear include Perris, Lopez, and
Diamond Valley, but those bite could all tank with more cold weather. Go
before it happens. Most Southern California crappie bites are off, but
there is still a few fish showing at Elsinore and Cuyamaca. The Central
Coast lakes of Lopez and San Antonio both have been pretty fair for the
crappie, too, with Lopez producing some bigger fish. Corona Lake cranked
out a 2 1/2 pounder.
CATFISH: The action at all of the planted-catfish lakes is slowing way
down, but the fall bite on bigger, hold-over or wild fish is worth
watching. While no huge fish were reported this week, places to watch
include Irvine Lake, Santa Ana River Lakes, Hesperia Lake, Skinner,
Diamond Valley, Henshaw, Corona Lake, El Capitan, Otay, and Silverwood.
The lower Colorado River and river backwater, ditches, and canals have
been fair with both flatheads and channels showing in the catch.

OCEAN FISHING REPORT
By Terrence Berg and Phil Friedman
www.976-TUNA.com
It’s pretty winter.
SAN DIEGO OFFSHORE SCENE: The one and 1 1/2-day boats are still fishing
75 to 110 miles off San Diego and getting mixed scores on albacore,
bluefin, yellowfin, and skipjack, but there is such thin coverage that
finding the action has been more problematic as the water cools. Most
boats also now only running on weekends, and -- at least this past week
-- the weather has been wonderful. Most boats have been returned with at
least two or three fish a rod. On the longer range trips, the seven to
10-day boats are finding spectacular fishing at Alijos Rocks for
yellowfin tuna. The Royal Polaris anglers reported in Wednesday with
limits of yellowfin to 55 pounds along with some yellowtail and wahoo.
Longer trips are most heading off Cabo San Lucas to the ridge in search
of bigger yellowfin, but that action has been slower this past week.
LOCAL BOTTOM FISH ACTION: From San Diego up into the Channel Islands
cooling water temperatures have just about shut off all the surface
bites and most skippers are switching to bottom fish. For the San Diego
and Orange County-based boats, that mostly means sculpin and a few sand
bass. For the Los Angeles County north boats, the action is on rockfish.
There is particularly good rockfish action in the Channel Islands with
limit-style fishing the rule most days.
ISLANDS UPDATE: San Clemente Island has mostly been deserted this past
week, but the few boats running out here have found a spotty calico bass
bite and even slower halibut action. There is very good rockfish action,
however. At Catalina Island, there continues to be a pretty fair bonito
bite along with spotty calico bass action, but both bites are slowing
fast with cooling water temperatures.
LOBSTER HOOP NETTING: The lobster season in full swing with generally
fair to good hoop-netting all along the coast. Catalina Island has been
a hot spot with good action in 20 to 65 feet of water around rocky
structure. The best “crawl” has been early in the evening.
INSTRUCTIONAL CHARTERS: The staff of 976-TUNA is hosting instructional
charters throughout the year, offering advice to beginning or veteran
anglers and on-the-water teaching of techniques for different saltwater
species. For more information on upcoming Shimano/976-TUNA instructional
charters, call 310-328-8426 or go to the website at www.976-TUNA.com.
