JIM
MATTHEWS’
PICKS OF THE WEEK
1. Diamond Valley Lake
continues to be wide open for the bass and trout. The best bass action
has been in five to 20 feet and the fish are primarily from three to
five pounds but a whopping 15-pounder was caught this past week.
Swimbaits, Creature Baits, and plastic worms are best. For an update,
call the marina at 951-926-7201 or Last Chance Bait & Tackle at
951-658-7410.
2. Big Bear Lake is very good for trout with a lot of quality fish
planted for the May Trout Classic showing each week. Limits are pretty
easy from trollers or bait anglers, and most stringers could have a real
quality fish over four pounds. For an update on the best action call Big
Bear Marina at 909-866-3218 or Big Bear Sporting Goods at 909-866-3222.
3. This stays our No. 3 sleeper pick. The tilapia bite at the Salton Sea
continues pretty good with some groups reporting 75- to 100-fish
stringers from the state park marina. These are mostly 1/2 to
3/4-pounders. The tilapia are showing along many shoreline areas in good
numbers and most are being caught on pieces of nightcrawlers. For an
update, check with the Salton Sea State Recreation Area ranger station
at 760-393-3052.
FRESHWATER HOT SPOTS
TROUT: Generally good fishing throughout the Eastern Sierra Nevada with
Bridgeport Reservoir and Crowley Lake perhaps the two top spots to fish.
The East Walker River is also an excellent bet for experienced fly
anglers, and most of the region is good. The Bishop Creek drainage was
planted with Alpers trout to eight pounds last week and bites are good
throughout the drainage. In Southern California, Big Bear Lake is very
good on holdover fish, and Diamond Valley Lake is awesome. In the High
Desert, Jess Ranch has been good this week.
LARGEMOUTH BASS: Diamond Valley, Casitas, Perris, Skinner, Castaic,
Cachuma, Isabella, Piru, Sutherland, San Vicente, and Lower Otay all
have improved in recent days and have pretty good bites again.
Silverwood and Pyramid just slow to fair. Poway, El Capitan, Hodges, and
Wohlford all have fair to good bites. On the Central Coast, Nacimiento
still has a good spotted bass bite, and Lopez is pretty good, too.
STRIPED BASS: Silverwood, Skinner, and Castaic get the top billing here
this week with a very good bites at all three. Pyramid is fair to good.
A few wipers are showing at Elsinore, too. On the Colorado River, the
best action has been at Havasu and Mead where a lot of smaller fish to
six pounds showing. Even the lower river below Havasu has areas of fair
to good action all the way to Palo Verde. No monster fish at Willow or
in Mohave reported this week.
PANFISH: The bluegill and redear bites are fair to good wherever these
panfish occur. Top bets include Perris, Lower Otay, Casitas, and Diamond
Valley, but bites are good on bluegill just about everywhere. Most of
the good crappie bites have all but died, but there is still fair action
at Elsinore.
CATFISH: One of the top bets has to be Hesperia Lake thanks to weekly
plants of pan-sized and trophy cats, but a lot of waters are kicking
into gear for the cats. Santa Ana River Lakes and Corona Lakes both
kicked off their catfish season with plants two weeks ago and the bite
is very good at both places. Irvine Lake started its catfish planting
season this past week, and it is starting to take off, too. All of the
San Bernardino County Park lakes are being planted each week now.
Diamond Valley still has a pretty good bite. The lower Colorado River
and river backwater, ditches, and canals have been consistently good
with both flatheads and channels showing in the catch. There was a
42-pound flathead reported this week.

caught a 6.25-pound largemouth bass. Andrew Khamsy, San Diego, landed a
5.90-pound largemouth on plastics off the east bank. The lake is open
for fishing and boating on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Boar rentals
available on Saturday and Sunday only. Information: 619-465-3474 or

WOHLFORD: Very good largemouth bass action with the fish out of their
post-spawn funk and feeding pretty aggressively. Swim baits, crawdads,
plastics, and golden shiners have all been productive. The Senior
Shoreline is the hot producing area. Jay Norton, Valley Center, caught
an 8-6 bass. Joey Mayerchik, Valley Center, caught an eight-pound bass
on a pink plastic worm. Trout action has been fair, but with the last
plant of the season on May 14 and the warming water conditions, that
bite won’t last for much longer. Top action has been on inflated
nightcrawlers, marshmallows, yellow Power Bait, and yellow Power Worms
fished on light line and No. 14 or smaller treble hooks. Boat Dock Cove
and Willow Cove have been the best spots. The crappie have moved in
tight to the bank and a few scrappy ones have been landed. The fish are
fairly shallow. Small golden shiners and crappie jigs are a hit. A few
bluegill showing in Oakvale Cove. The catfish fishing is fair to good on
mackerel, chicken liver, nightcrawlers and shrimp. A 2,000-pound plant
of channel catfish will go in Thursday, June 26. A few carp biting on
dough balls. There is a temporary ban on private boat launching,
including canoes, kayaks, float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders and
anchors due to quagga mussels. Rental boats are available. Information:

Bass in 15 to 30 feet during the day on shad. Bobby Mathews, San Diego,
caught a 6-8 largemouth. Mike Coronado, San Diego, landed an eight-pound

big bass are starting to bite with fish to 11 pounds in the boat launch
area and in Cabin Cove. The boat launch is open. The trout bite is still
hanging on with an OK bite in the late morning, and early afternoons on
Power Bait, rainbow Rapalas or Kastmasters. Rowboats and motorboats are
available to rent Wednesday through Sunday. Information: 24-hour fishing
update line 619-478-5473, ranger station 619-694-3049.

sparks occasionally for anglers using crappie jigs. The catfish bite is
fair around the dock on nightcrawlers. Ryan Richie and Coy Coleman, San
Diego, caught a four-pound catfish. Small bass have been landed in the
shallows, right off shore on plastics. Information: 760-782-3501.
COLORADO RIVER
LAKE MEAD: Fair to good striper action in the back of Vegas Wash and in
Boxcar Cove, but most of the fish are small. There is also a decent bite
on the smaller fish in Black Canyon and near the dam. Smallmouth bass
are still actively taking almost any bait.
WILLOW BEACH: Continued fair to good trout action on spinners, salmon
eggs, or floating baits. Some fish to three pounds. Stripers still
spotty. Information: 928-767-4747.

feet of water just outside of coves. Shore anglers are catching fish in
the mouths of coves near the marina. Night fishing has been the most
successful, although anglers are catching fish in the early morning and
late afternoon hours as well. Information: 702-297-1464.

Five-Mile Landing. Information: 928-768-2350.
HAVASU: The striper bite is fair to good all over the lake with a lot of
fish to four pounds. The stripers are keying on shad, so swimbaits and
small cranks are a good bet. The smallmouth and largemouth bass bites
are fair to good, especially the smallmouth. Some bass in the three to
four-pound range have been landed off the point at Six Site. Also a good
redear bite with fish on beds in the Sandpoint area. Information:

BRIDGEPORT REGION: Bridgeport Reservoir remains low, but the fishing
action is very good to excellent. Anglers are having 20 to 30 fish
catch-and-release days with the average trout in the 1 1/2 to two-pound
range with fish to four or five pounds each week. The shore action is
getting tougher now that the fish have mostly moved off Rainbow Point,
but bait anglers, trollers, and fly-fishermen working from boats and
float tubes are seeing good fishing. The midge action is just starting
to take off for the fly guys. Nico Robles, 4, Bridgeport, caught a 4-7
rainbow in Bridgeport Reservoir. Steve Amendson, Bridgeport, also landed
one that same size. The East Walker River is excellent with flows at 177
cfs much of the past week with the best bite on caddis larva or midge
patterns fished below a strike indicator with a late-eveining caddis
surface bite. Lots of 18 to 22-inch fish. Kirman has been good for
cutthroats, and other walk-in lakes – Roosevelt, Lane, Secret, and Poore
– are now accessible and the fishing has been pretty decent. Higher
elevation stuff is still locked up. Virginia Lakes are very good. Big
Virginia’s ice went out about a week ago and the fly and bait bite is
good. Twin Lakes have also been good with a lot of pan-sized trout, but
rainbows to 5 1/2 pounds have been reported in the past week and some
two to four-pound browns have also been landed. For the East Walker
River flows, you can check this website for real time data: http://waterdata.usgs.gov/ca/nwis/uv?10293000.

JUNE LAKE LOOP: Trout action is generally fair to good throughout the
June Lake Loop. Gull is still producing some of the browns planted
earlier this year, but the bite is tougher now, but lots of rainbow
showing early and late in the day. Silver, June and Grant have a fair
Alpers’ trout bite with the best bet at the inlets. The hot ticked in
Silver has been trolling in 25 feet of water, and drifting and shore
fishing with nightcrawlers has been the ticket in June. For fly anglers,
June and Silver continue to have good midge hatches in the mornings and
evenings. However, when the wind picks up things slow down. The lakes
will be receiving regular DFG and Alpers’ plants throughout the season.
Flows are down and the water has cleared at Rush Creek. Nymphing is
best. Information: Ernie’s Fishing Tackle (760) 648-7756 or June Lake
Marina (760) 648-7726.
MAMMOTH AREA: Crowley Lake remains good to excellent for anglers
trolling, fishing bait from boat or shore, or fly-fishing. Trollers are
working from Aligator Point to the SS Relief with the bigger fish to
five pounds in 20 to 30 feet of water. Smaller fish from 1-8 to 2-8
shallower. Rainbows, cutthroats, and brown trout all showing. Shore bait
action is best in McGee and Hilton Creek bays and off Green Banks. Fly
anglers are mostly fishing black and gray midge patterns in No. 14 and
16 off Sandy Point and in McGee in eight to 14 feet of water. Upper
Owens above Benton Crossing bridge is excellent for fly anglers tossing
caddis dries or fishing nymphs under a strike indicator. Below the
bridge, the planted trout action is very good. Hot Creek is good to
excellent the yellow sally stonefly hatch started this week and it is
providing very good action on No. 14 or 16 yellow stones. Good stocker
trout action in Mammoth Creek and all the Mammoth Lakes – Mary, Mamie,
Gull, and George all producing fish. The road to the San Joaquin opened
this past Saturday, and while the San Joaquin River is high and still a
little tough, Sotcher and Starkweather lakes both are very good with
fish to 3 1/2 pounds reported. Convict Lake is good with quality fish,
often over five pounds biting in the inlet and off the north and south
shores on Power Bait and nightcrawlers. Fishing information: Crowley
Lake Fish Camp at 760-935-4301 or www.CrowleyLakeFishCamp.com. The

Speed, Agoura, caught a 4 1/2-pounder, while Lee Bell, Bishop, and Doran
Follis, Santa Ana, each had 3 3/4-pounders. Lori Carnahan, Sky Valley,
landed a 3 1/4-pound brown. The Bishop Creek Canyon Summer Classic
Tagged Trout Derby will run through June 30. Registion and a $5 entry
fee is required to participate, but all of the stores and landings in
the Bishop Creek drainage, and most of the tackle and fly shops in
Bishop have sign-up forms. Tagged fish will be worth from $50 to $500
with five $500 tagged fish. The Piute Palace and Adopt-a-Creek are also
sponsoring the “Cash of the Day” event where tagged fish are planted in
Intake II, North Lake, and Bishop Creek. Anglers can redeem these tagged
fish at the Piute Palace for cash. Pleasant Valley Reservoir is fair to
good. Bishop Creek and Intake II planted this week, and the bite is fair
to good. The lower Owens River (in both the Gorge below Crowley Lake and
below Pleasant Valley Reservoir) has poor conditions with extremely high
water. For flow information on the whole Owens River system, you can get
information here: http://www.ladwp.com/ladwp/aqueduct/showAqueductMap.ladwp?contentId=LADWP_AQUERTD_SCID.

OCEAN FISHING REPORT
By Terrence Berg and Phil Friedman
www.976-TUNA.com
CHANNEL ISLANDS UPDATE: Wind was the culprit for the slow fishing in
recent days, but with the return of good weather, look for a big
rebound. There are a lot of white seabass in the Channel Islands along
with calico bass and halibut. It shouldn't be too long until the
barracuda show up and, shortly thereafter, the sand bass. Of course,
great eating rockfish are always plentiful.
LOS ANGELES LANDINGS UPDATE: Catalina Island seems ready to bust wide
open. There is a huge spread of white seabass, mixed with yellowtail, at
the island. With the good weather forecast and warming water temps,
things seem on the verge of busting wide open. The calico bass bite has
been quite good at the island, and that is always a precursor for more
surface action. San Clemente Island has been tough to reach because of
windy weather. This is yet another place that could bust open with good
weather. There are lots of yellowtail and a wide open calico bass here.
But the yellows are not biting much. The schools of white seabass have
also not been on the feed. If weather and the next full moon coincide at
the same time – watch out. In the Santa Monica Bay, there has been up
and down barracuda fishing. When it has been hot, it's been red hot.
Calico and sand bass fishing has been up and down on the Horseshoe Kelp,
but at times, it has been wide open, too.
ORANGE COUNTY LANDINGS UPDATE: Nice barracuda fishing has been the rule
although these snakes do take a day or two off, now and then. For the
most part, boats from Newport, Dana Point, and Oceanside have been all
over the gar. Best way to take them is on the iron (lures). Calico bass
fishing along the Orange County coast has been quite good on most days
too. Light line with Blackwater fluorocarbon combined with a good, hot
bait has bee a fantastic way to get a bite. There have been a few
yellowtail zooming around locally, too, so that action may be in out
future.
SAN DIEGO UPDATE: Anglers aboard the Excel braved some poor weather a
couple of hundred miles from San Diego for 24 albacore in the past week,
and fishermen on the Royal Polaris have been getting a piece of albie
and bluefin, too. But conditions have been horrible. Look for the long
rage scores to rock shortly as the weather comes down. Still no albacore
or bluefin tuna in one-day range of San Diego, but the weather has been
so rough, no one has been able to look around. With much nicer weather
now, look for some tuna to start being taken really soon. Closer to
port, a ton of yellowtail have moved in to the Coronado Islands, but
they remain reluctant to bite full speed. That too may only be a matter
of time. For now, the name of the game for the local and Coronado fleet
is just a pick on the yellows (and not a very good one), a shot of
barracuda now and then, decent bonito fishing, and some decent calico
bass fishing. With better tides going into next Wednesday full moon,
this could be the best fishing weekend of the year.
INSTRUCTIONAL CHARTERS: The staff of 976-TUNA and Shimano host
instructional charters throughout the year, offering beginning anglers
or veterans advice and on-the-water teaching of techniques for different
saltwater species. The next trip is a two-day trip aboard the Grande out
of San Diego on June 15 for albacore. This one is $275. For more
information on upcoming Shimano/976-TUNA instructional charters, call
310-328-8426.
