JIM MATTHEWS’          PICKS OF THE WEEK

1. Hesperia Lake vaults back into our top picks this week. This is not just because of the two 200-plus pound class sturgeon caught Monday, but because the trout and catfish bites are both really very good. Weeks of plants during dismal weather seemed to have stockpiled a lot of both species in the lake, and now, with better weather and fishing conditions, the bite is hot again. Since both the 268- and 215-pound sturgeon caught this week were released, there’s a chance to hook the biggest fish in freshwater in Southern California. Call the tackle shop for an update on the bite at 800-521-6332 or 760-244-5951.
2. Diamond Valley is still a top pick for largemouth bass. Even though we’re between the best moon phases to fish, the bite is hot with the bass in a full-on spawn. Most of the fish are tight in shallow water on beds, but bigger fish are still holding off on points or moving in and out. For updates, check with the marina staff at 951-926-7201 or Last Chance Bait & Tackle in Hemet at 951-658-7410.
3. Lake Perris continues to crank out some quality largemouth bass. This past week, fish at 12 and 10 pounds were reported. The fish are in a full-spawn mode here, too. Most of the smaller fish are showing on plastics, but the bigger bass are being caught on swimbaits and cranks. There was a DFG trout plant last week. For an update, check with the marina staff at 951-657-2179.

FRESHWATER HOT SPOTS

TROUT: Good trout action throughout the region. Top bets this week have been Santa Ana River Lakes, Laguna Niguel, Irvine Lake, and Corona Lake. All four of these waters have been crowded. In the High Desert, Hesperia Lake, Jess Ranch, and Mojave Narrows all have been good this week, and all of the inland San Bernardino County Park lakes -- Glen Helen, Cucamonga-Guasti, Prado, and Yucaipa are also fair to good. In San Diego County, Wohlford, Dixon, Poway, Jennings, Morena, and Cuyamaca have consistently fair to good bites after weekly plants. In the southern Sierra, Lake Isabella and the Kern River are both very good. The Eastern Sierra’ early trout season continues good at Diaz Lake and the small streams from Independence south and all were planted again this week.
LARGEMOUTH BASS: Spawn time. Casitas, Diamond Valley, Perris, Skinner, Castaic, Sutherland, San Vicente, and Lower Otay all have been good this past week, thanks to the continued warmer, sunnier weather. Add in Piru, Cachuma, Skinner, and Silverwood among the list of waters getting better fast. Poway, El Capitan, Hodges, and Wohlford all have fair and improving bites. On the Central Coast, Nacimiento still has a good spotted bass bite, and Lopez is worth fishing for largemouths. Keep in mind all of the local lakes with bass, except at higher elevations, have fish on beds.
STRIPED BASS: Skinner has fair to good action, but the reports coming in from Castaic and Silverwood show these bites are also breaking open. Pyramid is closed until early April for dock repair and lake drawdown. On the Colorado River, bites were improving, but Willow Beach, and Mohave have all been very spotty. Havasu and Mead are both breaking wide open with smaller fish to six pounds showing. Even the lower river below Havasu has areas of good action all the way to Palo Verde.
PANFISH: The panfish bites are just starting to turn on. There are very good crappie bites at Buena Vista Lake (near Taft) in the southern San Joaquin Valley, and other budding crappie bites to note are at Piru, Hodges, and the Topoc Marsh on the Colorado River (south of Needles on the Arizona side). Bluegill and redear are both still slow most places, but a few big bluegill are showing at Diamond Valley and there is a budding redear bite at Lake Perris.
CATFISH: Diamond Valley still has a decent bite, but overall the catfish action is still mostly slow. More fish are showing at Hesperia Lake thanks to warm weather this past week, and some cats are starting to show in better numbers in the lower Colorado River. Some big blues are also being caught from some of the San Diego area lakes, but no real monsters again this week. Sturgeon put on a show at Hesperia Lake again this week with fish at 268 and 215 pounds caught on Monday.

OCEAN FISHING REPORT

By Terrence Berg and Phil Friedman
www.976-TUNA.com

LONG RANGE UPDATE: The 10 to 18-day boats out of San Diego are still seeing consistet yellowfin and tuna fishing, but the quality of the tuna reported in the past week has not been as good. The Royal Polaris reported putting 10 tuna in the hold on Monday along with a number of wahoo, but the anglers were treated to seeing a huge fish described as having the body of a grouper and the head of a shark. One angler said he thought it was a megamouth.
SAN CLEMENTE YELLOWTAIL: The yellowtail bite at San Clemente Island slowed this past week coming off the full moon and the tides and weather conditions (windy) do not bode well for this bite through the weekend. That could also explain the lake of angler pressure here.
CATALINA UPDATE: There continues to be some white seabass action at Catalina Island, but the same winds, cooler water, and poor tides that have slowed other bites along the coast are also affecting the Catalina bite. While there are a lot of fish at the island and an equivalent volume of bait, the fish just have not been coorerating. Some wsb at Catalina, which is where most of the focus has been. Not cooperating very well. The sporadic catch of seabass have pointed to generally good quality with some fish to 50 pounds reported in the past week.
ROCKFISH HOT: The rockfish bite has been good all up and down the coast, with the better spots in the Santa Monica Bay, off La Jolla, and in the Channel Islands all mostly seeing limit-style cod fishing. Ling cod season reopens April 1.
HALIBUT ACTION: Along most of the sandy beaches, the halibut action has been getting better – but it’s still not breaking wide open yet. Private boaters and skippers are focusing on small pockets where they get bit on drifts. The fish seem to be congregated and working the same spots has been the most productive. Top bets have been off del Mar, Newport, in the Santa Monica Bay and off San Pedro.
INSTRUCTIONAL CHARTERS: The staff of 976-TUNA and SKB host instructional charters throughout the year, offering beginning anglers or veterans advice and on-the-water teaching of techniques for different saltwater species. The next trip is a two-day trip aboard the Big Game 90 leaving April 13 targeting white seabass, yellowtail, and rockfish. This trip is limited to 28 anglers and the cost is $199. This will be followed by overnight trip aboard the Westerly out of Long Beach Sportfishing April 24 targeting white seabass or yellowtail. Cost is $99. There is a also special Cino de Mayo trip May 4-9 to teach anglers the basics of fishing Baja. This trip will be held out of Palmas de Cortez. For more information on upcoming SKB/976-TUNA instructional charters, call 310-328-8426.
