JIM MATTHEWS’          PICKS OF THE WEEK

1. Diamond Valley is the hands-down number one pick for this week. When you wrap together a full-on spawn, a full moon, and better weather, conditions are perfect. If there was one weekend of the year that screamed out “go bass fishing,” this is it. And DVL has probably the best bite in a slew of good to excellent bass bites throughout Southern California. There will probably be more bass over six pounds caught here in the next week than any other lake in Southern California. A lot of fish are tight in shallow water on beds, but bigger fish are still holding off on points or moving in and out. For updates, check with the marina staff at 951-926-7201 or the folks at Last Chance Bait & Tackle in Hemet at 951-658-7410.
2. Lost in the shadow of DVL, Lake Perris is almost quietly cranking out some of the best largemouth bass in the region. Its fish are also in full-spawn mode, and the top fish here this past week was a 13-pounder. A DFG trout plant here this week could also bring up those huge females to get a good meal before spawning. This makes for tough decisions: fish plastics and what a lot of bass or fish big swimbaits and maybe caught one really big one. Isn’t that a great dilemma to face? For an update, check with the marina staff at 951-657-2179.
3. Is it world record bass week? There hasn’t been a lot of news coming from little Lake Dixon, but trout plants last week and this week, the correct moon phase, and the spawn could combine to make this San Diego County water spew out one or more of its huge largemouth bass. It will be crowded, but mid-week anglers will have a little more solitude. For an update on the Dixon bite, call 760-839-4345 or visit the web site at www.dixonlake.com.

FRESHWATER HOT SPOTS

TROUT: Generally good trout action throughout the region. Top bets this week have been Santa Ana River Lakes, Laguna Niguel, Irvine Lake, and Corona Lake. All four of these waters have been crowded. In the High Desert, Hesperia Lake, Jess Ranch, and Mojave Narrows all have been good this week, and all of the inland San Bernardino County Park lakes -- Glen Helen, Cucamonga-Guasti, Prado, and Yucaipa are also fair to good. In San Diego County, Wohlford, Dixon, Poway, Jennings, Morena, and Cuyamaca continue to have a consistently fair to good bites after weekly plants. In the southern Sierra, Lake Isabella and the Kern River are both very good, and Buena Vista Lakes are good. The Eastern Sierra’ early trout opener at Diaz Lake and the small streams from Independence south were very good and all were planted again this week if you need a dose of Sierra air.
LARGEMOUTH BASS: Spawn time. Casitas, Diamond Valley, Perris, Skinner, Castaic, San Vicente, and Lower Otay all have been good this past week, thanks to the continued warmer, sunnier weather. Add in Piru, Pyramid, Cachuma, Skinner, and Silverwood among the list of waters getting better fast. Poway, El Capitan, Hodges, and Wohlford all have fair and improving bites. On the Central Coast, Nacimiento still has a good spotted bass bite, and Lopez is worth fishing for largemouths. Keep in mind all of the local lakes with bass, except at higher elevations, are likely to start breaking wide opening as we move into a full moon on the Friday.
STRIPED BASS: Skinner really turned on this week with very good action, but the reports coming in from Castaic and Silverwood show these bites are also breaking open. Pyramid is closed until early April for dock repair and lake drawdown. On the Colorado River, bites were improving, but Mead, Willow Beach, and Mohave have all been very spotty, but Havasu is also breaking wide open with smaller fish to six pounds showing all over the lake. Even the lower river below Havasu has areas of good action all the way to Palo Verde.
PANFISH: The panfish bites are just starting to turn on. There are very good crappie bites at Buena Vista Lake (near Taft) in the southern San Joaquin Valley, and other budding crappie bites to note are at Piru, Hodges, and the Topoc Marsh on the Colorado River (south of Needles on the Arizona side). Bluegill and redear are both still slow most places, but a few big bluegill are showing at Diamond Valley and there is a budding redear bite at Lake Perris.
CATFISH: Diamond Valley still has a decent bite, but overall the catfish action is still mostly slow. A few fish are showing at Hesperia Lake and some cats are starting to show in better numbers in the lower Colorado River. Some big blues are also starting to show from some of the San Diego area lakes, but no real monsters again this week.

OCEAN FISHING REPORT

By Terrence Berg and Phil Friedman
www.976-TUNA.com

CHANNEL ISLANDS UPDATE: The Coroloma out of Ventura Sportfishing has been near or at limits of rockfish every time they have been out. The Lucanus jig by Shimano has been red hot and with the ling cod opener April 1st, things are only going to get better. More squid have also moved in around the Channel Islands raising hope for halibut, white seabass, yellowtail and calico bass. For now, everyone is happy with the great bottom bite.
LOS ANGELES AREA LANDINGS: Anglers aboard the Phantom out of Pierpoint Sportfishing in Long Beach have caught white seabass on the boat’s last last seven trips to Catalina Island. On the most recent, seven anglers had eight white seabass to 41 pounds. While seabass fishing has not been wide open, it has been good enough to suggest that we are on the verge of a good season. One anglers aboard the Big Game 90, out of Marina Sportfishing in Long Beach, caught a 30-pound yellowtail at San Clemente Island on a trip early this week. The weather was up for most of this trip, so anglers are hoping that with better weather, those yellows might chew. There is excellent rockfish and sculpin action along the coast for the half and three-quarter day fleet, with a shot of sand bass, too. Anglers on the New del Mar out of Marina del Rey have had great bottom fishing with good twilight sand bass fishing, too. Same kind of thing out of Redondo. The 3/4-day Spitfire anglers’ have had sculpin, rockfish, bass and there is hope for some barracuda soon.
ORANGE COUNTY LANDINGS: Orange county anglers are seeing the same kind of bite at San Clemente and Catalina islands with a lot of buzz about the yellowtail and seabass, respectively. Anglers on the boats fishing nearshore waters have been catching a few halibut, a decent number of sand bass, and seeing a good bite on sculpin.
SAN DIEGO UPDATE: Anglers on the 1 1/2-day boats have been heading down the coast for great ling cod and bottom fishing. There are always a few yellowtail mixed in on these trips and more and more barracuda are showing. Tremendous fishing has been the rule. The barracuda are also starting to show for the local fleet. It is time to get your Sumo Jr's and jig sticks ready to go. There have also been a few calico bass, sand bass, and bonito for the local fleet. It seems like spring is almost here.
INSTRUCTIONAL CHARTERS: The staff of 976-TUNA and SKB host instructional charters throughout the year, offering beginning anglers or veterans advice and on-the-water teaching of techniques for different saltwater species. The next trip is a two-day trip aboard the Big Game 90 leaving April 13 targeting white seabass, yellowtail, and rockfish. This trip is limited to 28 anglers and the cost is $199. This will be followed by overnight trip aboard the Westerly out of Long Beach Sportfishing April 24 targeting white seabass or yellowtail. Cost is $99. There is a also special Cino de Mayo trip May 4-9 to teach anglers the basics of fishing Baja. This trip will be held out of Palmas de Cortez. For more information on upcoming SKB/976-TUNA instructional charters, call 310-328-8426.
