March 05, 2008 JIM MATTHEWS’ PICKS OF THE WEEK
1. The spring bass action is breaking wide open with the nice weather this week. Add in that we’re heading into a new moon on Friday, and the action should be excellent over the next few days. That said, Casitas Lake is our number one pick for bass fishing. There were two 12 3/4-pound bass caught this past week, and males are already up on beds. Can you say “sight fishing”? Call the marina at 805-649-2043 for an up-to-the-minute update. 2. Diamond Valley Lake, while still a little cooler than other bass waters in the region, is also starting to break wide open on the largemouth bass. The fish are not tight in the shallows yet, like they are at nearby Lake Skinner and Lake Perris (which are also both good bets, too), but they are staging on points and shelfs getting ready to move up. While only one fish over 10 pounds was reported this past week, this could be the week for some real quality bass to show -- and in good numbers. For updates, check with the marina staff at 951-926-7201 or the folks at Last Chance Bait & Tackle in Hemet at 951-658-7410. 3.
While it’s probably not fair to ignore everything else, the third top pick
is going to Lake Perris for its exploding bass bite. A lot of fish are
already on beds, and it did produce the best bass of the past week -- a 13
1/2-pounder. Since Perris has been drawn down, it has been getting less
pressure (especially with Diamond Valley just down the road). It shouldn’t
be overlooked. For an update on the action, call the marina at
951-657-2179.
TROUT: Better weather and clearing water really turned on the trout bites all over Southern California. Top bet this week has been Santa Ana River Lakes, which has been wide open. But Laguna Niguel, Irvine Lake, and Corona Lake have also been pretty good. All four of these waters have been crowded. In the High Desert, Hesperia Lake, Jess Ranch, and Mojave Narrows all have been good this week, and all of the inland San Bernardino County Park lakes -- Glen Helen, Cucamonga-Guasti, Prado, and Yucaipa are also fair to good. In San Diego County, Wohlford, Dixon, Poway, Jennings, Morena, and Cuyamaca continue to have a consistently fair to good bites after weekly plants. In the southern Sierra, Lake Isabella and the Kern River are both still pretty good, and Buena Vista Lakes is good. The Eastern Sierra’ early trout opener at Diaz Lake and the small streams from Independence south were very good and all were planted again this week if you need a dose of Sierra air. LARGEMOUTH BASS: Casitas, Diamond Valley, Perris, Skinner, Castaic, and Lower Otay all have been good this past week, thanks to the warmer, sunnier weather. Add in Piru, Pyramid, Cachuma, Skinner, and Silverwood among the list of waters getting better fast. Poway, San Vicente, El Capitan, Hodges, and Wohlford all have fair bites. On the Central Coast, Nacimiento still has a fair spotted bass bite, and Lopez is worth fishing for largemouths. Keep in mind all of the local lakes with bass, except at higher elevations, are likely to start breaking opening with the perfect weather and moon conditions forecast for this week. This is the week to go. Thursday and Friday are likely to be the best days for moon phase, but the whole weekend should be good. STRIPED BASS: Skinner really turned on this week with very good action, but the reports coming in from Pyramid, Castaic, and Silverwood show that all three are also turning on with the better weather. On the Colorado River, bites were improving with Mead very good for small fish. Willow Beach and Mohave has been very spotty, but Havasu is also breaking wide open with smaller fish to six pounds showing all over the lake. Even the lower river below Havasu has areas of good action all the way to Palo Verde. PANFISH: The panfish bites are just starting to turn on. There are very good crappie bites at Buena Vista Lake (near Taft) in the southern San Joaquin Valley, and other budding crappie bites to note are at Piru, Hodges, and the Topoc Marsh on the Colorado River (south of Needles on the Arizona side). Bluegill and redear are both still slow most places, but a few big bluegill are showing at Diamond Valley and there is a budding redear bite at Lake Perris. CATFISH: Diamond Valley still has a decent bite, but overall the catfish action is still mostly slow. A few fish are showing at Hesperia Lake and some cats are starting to show in better numbers in the lower Colorado River. Some big blues are also starting to show from some of the San Diego area lakes with a 52-pounder caught at San Vicente, a 42-pounder at Lower Otay, and a 26-pounder at Sutherland. SANTA ANA RIVER LAKES: Excellent trout action this past week in spite of big crowds. Barry Taylor, Corona, landed a 22 3/4-pounder while fishing off the Sandy Beach, while Jim Davis, Anaheim, caught a 22-pound rainbow. Both Davis’ and Taylor’s fish were caught with rainbow Nitro Bait doused with Nitro Grease. But while a few big fish were caught, it was the volume of rainbows in the one to three-pound range that stole the show, fish that have been stockpiling in the lake after weeks of plants during rotten weather. With the weather finally nice and fishing conditions improving many anglers bought second and even third fishing permits so they could keep adding fish to the stringer. Five-fish stringers were mostly in the six to nine-pound range, with most anglers getting at least one rainbow in the 2 1/2 to three-pound class. Johnny Castro, Santa Ana, had four rainbows that weighed in at 16 1/2 pounds, but his big fish was a 13-pounder, and all were taken on rainbow Nitro Bait fished near the boat dock. Mark Walker, Los Angeles, just weighed in one trout from his limit, an 8 1/2-pound rainbow he caught off the sandy beach on green Nitro Bait. The best action has been on Nitro Bait and other dough baits doused with glow Nitro Grease, and the trout have been showing all around the lake. Lightning Trout have been mixed in with the regular rainbows after they were planted for three weeks in February. Some catfish and sturgeon are also showing with the better weather. OCEAN FISHING REPORT
By Terrence Berg and Phil Friedman
CHANNEL ISLANDS UPDATE: Great rockfishing in the Channel Islands since the season reopened March 1. Most skippers are reporting rockfish limits for all anglers on board, along with a smattering of whitefish and the occasional halibut. LOS ANGELES AREA UPDATE: Catalina Island has gobs of live squid on the back side, so it’s no wonder that more and more white seabass are being taken there, especially as conditions continue to improve -- both the weather and tides. Water temperatures are still a little low, so the bite is still scratchy, but there have been enough private boat catches to suggest we’re in for a good season at the island. For the half- and three-quarter day boats, the bottom fish bite in the Santa Monica Bay for the Redondo and Marina del Rey boats has been wide open with reds, chili pepper, and salmon grouper all filling the sacks. The sculpin are also still showing in good numbers. The winter sand bass bite also still remains very good, especially considering the season, for anglers fishing leadheads tipped with squid. ORANGE COUNTY UPDATE: The six-pack boat Liquid Coast Highway made a trip to Catalina Island from Huntington Harbor this past week and anglers on board caught limits of calico bass and dumped a 40 pound white seabass at color. This is just more evidence that Catalina is waking up and getting ready to rock. Anglers aboard the Freelance out of Davey's Locker hooked five white seabass on a 3/4-day trip this week, landing just two. On the days when these gamefish don't bite, there have been plenty of rockfish. Anglers aboard Dana Wharf boats continue to pick at the local bass with an occasional halibut, backing that all up with good sculpin and rockfish catches. SAN DIEGO UPDATE: There is good to excellent rockfishing now for the San Diego-based fleet now that the rock cod season has reopened in American waters. The local boats have had been near limits of bottomfish for all anglers on board, while the 1 1/2-day boats – fishing in Mexican waters – are seeing an incredible bite on rockfish, lingcod, and even an occasional yellowtail. The Big Game 90 was on a 1 1/2-day 976-TUNA trip this past week went skipper Mike Jewitt spied a bird school of big barracuda and yellowtail. The anglers on board boated over 40 big barracuda and one yellowtail in a great iron bite. For the half-day boats, there are still a few jumbo squid around, a few local bass, and even an occasional yellowtail or white seabass around La Jolla. INSTRUCTIONAL CHARTERS: The staff of 976-TUNA and SKB host instructional charters throughout the year, offering beginning anglers or veterans advice and on-the-water teaching of techniques for different saltwater species. The next trip is a 1 1/2-day rockfish and spring yellowtail trip to Colonet aboard the Legend. The trip leaves March 7 and is limited to 28 anglers. Cost is $199. There is a special Cino de Mayo trip May 4-9 to teach anglers the basics of fishing Baja. This trip will be held out of Palmas de Cortez. For more information on upcoming SKB/976-TUNA instructional charters, call 310-328-8426.
