Fund-raising to the half-way point to keep Salton Sea state park open

By JIM MATTHEWS

www.OutdoorNewsService.com

The Salton Sea State Recreation Area was scheduled to be closed beginning July 1, but it appears a grant from the California State Parks Foundation in May, along with other donations from local water districts and cities, will keep the state park open at least into the fall.

The Sea and Desert Interpretive Association is a non-profit organization that has been granted the authority to keep the area open if it can come up with the funds. As of mid-week, the SDIA has raised $112,000 -- about half of the money it has projected would be needed to keep the park open each year.

The Salton Sea is one of the finest fisheries in the West. The volume of tilapia it produces each season is epic and the state park is the most popular location on the whole Salton Sea to fish, with anglers crowding onto the headquarters fishing jetty this time of year. Families fishing at the jetty have been filling ice chests completely full of tilapia the past month, with the fish averaging from a half-pound up to 1 ½-pounds, with some even bigger. It frequently takes far less time to catch an ice chest full than it does to clean them.

Paul Reisman, the acting superintendent of the Salton Sea State Recreation Area, said Wednesday the SDIA has received more than $112,000 in pledges and grants to help keep the recreation area open.  The SDIA is a non-profit, supporting organization that has been raising the funds necessary to try to keep the Sea’s only state recreation area open. Besides the California State Parks Foundation, donations or pledges were provided by the Imperial Irrigation District, Coachella Valley Water District, and the City of Rancho Mirage.

“We are still short of our goal, but we expect to hear from more cities in the Coachella Valley this week. The SDIA president and board members have really stepped up to seek the funds needed,” said Reisman.

According to state parks, besides the anglers who come to fish, the state recreation area draws 125,000 visitors annually, including bird-watchers, boaters and kayakers, and desert campers, and the sea is essential to the local economy. A study by Sacramento State University’s Department of Recreation, Parks and Tourism Administration determined that over $4 million in spending is generated in the immediate area by park visitors.

Anglers can go to www.seaanddesert.org for more information on the closure and fund-raising effort.

WOLF DELISTING BY CONGRESS UPHELD: Wolves are officially no longer an endangered species. The scientists charged with their management in the greater Yellowstone region have been saying this for several years, but radical environmental groups have been suing to stop all management of the species that involves controlling their exploding numbers. So Congress removed the wolves from the ESA to get around liberal judges and the environmental extremists.

Ironically, the liberal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the legality of Congress’ removal of wolves from the federal endangered species list in March, and the deadline to appeal this decision was earlier this week. The nature-is-cuddly-crowd was conspicuously silent, probably assuming that if the Ninth Circuit wouldn’t support them, they didn’t have a chance in the frozen Arctic that the Supreme Court would uphold their frivolous arguments.

So, what this finally means is that science-based, state-regulated management of wolves in now the law of the land. It doesn’t mean they will be wiped off the landscape. It just means that biologists can balance their numbers with their food sources and human interests, too.

UPDATE ON BILL TO BAN DOGS FOR BEAR HUNTING: The bill that would ban the use of dogs when hunting bears and bobcats in California is set to be heard before the Assembly Committee on Water, Parks, and Wildlife beginning 9 .m., Tuesday, June 26. If the bill passes out of this Committee it is highly likely that the bill will pass and be signed by Governor Moonbeam.

SB 1221 (Ted Lieu-D) argues that hunting of bears and bobcats with dogs does not represent the "fair chase" of these species. Ironically, it is the most selective method of hunting these great game animals, allowing the hunter to assure that only older age class animals and those without young are taken. It is the method used by all wildlife professionals to capture and mark both bears and bobcats for studies. It would also set a precedent for banning the use of dogs for all hunting, including retrieving and pointing breeds that reduce the number of wounded and lost gamebirds.

The bill is simply anti-hunting legislation right out of the Human Society of the United States’ plan to eliminate hunting in California a piece at a time. It is also a legislative reaction to California Fish and Game Commissioner Dan Richard’s recent legal mountain lion hunt in Idaho that caused a firestorm of controversy here. This is the petty legislature’s way to “get even.”

The California Outdoor Heritage Alliance (COHA) is asking all sportsmen to send e-mails and letter or make phone calls to assembly committee members and your own representatives in Sacramento to try to win this battle. Over 2,000 hunters signed a petition circulated at the Shooting Sports Fair held at Mike Raahauge Shooting Enterprises in Corona the first weekend of this month asking the bill be dropped.

Sportsmen can get more information on how to get involved at www.outdoorheritage.org.

ANOTHER LAWSUIT OVER LEAD AMMUNITION: The Center for Biological Diversity has decided to sue the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) over its failure to ban lead ammunition to – supposedly –protect humans and wildlife from lead poisoning. The EPA has twice told the CBD that is a) did not have the jurisdiction to ban lead and b) there wasn’t the compelling scientific evidence to ban lead ammunition across the board. So now they’re dragging the EPA into court.

The National Shooting Sports Foundation has repeatedly pointed out that except for waterfowl and condors, in some situations that do not require bans (Arizona is protecting condors as effectively as California without an ammunition ban), there is no compelling evidence that lead ammunition is either a danger to humans or wildlife populations. Increasingly, CBD is looking more and more like just another anti-hunting organization.

Perhaps, yet again, the EPA will say to the CBD: Show us the science. And maybe through a judge this time that will demand CBD pay for the government’s legal expenses of this frivolous lawsuit.

April 27, 2013 - This pair of 10-pound brown trout was caught by Daniel Perez of Pine Groove from Lower Twin Lake near Bridgeport the opening day of the 2013 trout season. They were two of four browns caught that hit or passed the 10-pound mark from Lower Twin opening day.
