While giant trout avoided angler’s hooks during the opening weekend of trout season in the Eastern Sierra Nevada, there was bluebird weather and excellent trout action just about everywhere in the region.

“Last opener everything was three or four weeks behind schedule because of all the cold weather. This year everything seems to be two or three weeks ahead,” said Mickey Baron with the Crowley lake Fish Camp. Baron said limits were the rule at Crowley this year for opener, a stark contrast to last year’s mediocre fishing. Bait anglers fishing inflated nightcrawlers or floating dough baits and trollers pulling Rapalas or similar lures both were getting easy limits, and fly anglers were already reporting 20 fish catch-and-release days fishing midges under a strike indicator.

Baron said the big fish of the weekend was a four-pound, 14-ounce rainbow landed by Joe Gechter, Santa Barbara, and the best brown was a 4-11 landed by Quentin Le Francoise. The average fish were in the 13 to 14-inch range and weighed about a pound, but most stringers had a least one fish in the two- to three-pound range. Baron said anglers were even getting Sacramento perch off Sandy Point and in Big Hilton Bay, something that usually doesn’t happen until late May.

Overall, the biggest trout reported opening weekend was an eight-pound, 10-ounce rainbow caught from Lower Twin Lake near Bridgeport by Miles Forsman of San Diego fishing from shore.

The Bridgeport region has had perhaps the best fishing in the Sierra the previous two openers, and Jim Reid at Ken’s Sporting Goods, said crowds were up this past weekend over the last two season kickoffs.

“The fishing was every bit as good as last year and the year before, maybe even better. I think everything was great. We certainly had better weather,” said Reid.

Reid said Bridgeport Reservoir was wide open Saturday and Sunday morning until about 11 a.m. and then shut off the rest of the day. It has been pretty consistent since, especially in the morning and evening, but he has been a little surprised it hasn’t produced a big brown trout yet. There’s just been a lot of fish from two to four pounds, but nothing in the double digits.

Virginia Lakes, some of the few waters in the region to have enough ice to support ice fishing opening day, had perhaps some of the best fishing in the whole region.

“I had one angler tell me that he lost count after catching and releasing 70 trout,” said Reid. “None of them were really big fish, but that’s a lot of fish.”

But the ice was melting rapidly, and Reid said that with mild temperatures and brisk winds Thursday afternoon, he didn’t think the ice cover would be safe or last much longer.

In the Lee Vining region, Highway 120 up to Tioga and Ellery lakes was expected to be open this weekend. This road is frequently not opened until at least Memorial Day weekend.

The June Lake loop waters were all ice-free, including the close-in backcountry waters of Parker and Walker lakes, and all of the waters provided excellent limit-style fishing. The big rainbow in the Loop was a five-pound, one-ounce fish caught by Ken Dubiel on a Thomas Buoyant from Gull Lake, while Dave Lozano of Arcadia had the top brown at 4.2-pounds, also from Gull on a nightcrawler.

Convict Lake was ice free and most anglers reported limits of pan-sized trout, but Bob Callahan of Temecula, caught the weekend’s big fish at Convict, a three-pound rainbow he landed on a nightcrawler off the north shore.

Further south in the Bishop Creek drainage, Sabrina and North lakes were ice free opening day and provided very good fishing. It was so balmy at Sabrina that the mosquitos were already becoming annoying. South Lake was mostly open water at the dam and marina on opener and the road was open, allowing good angler access to the hot fishing. The lake was almost completely ice-free at mid-week.

The Sierra trout season is off to a good start.
