Record snowpack, but many waters already are ice free for trout opener

By JIM MATTHEWS

www.OutdoorNewsService.com

In spite of a snowpack in the Eastern Sierra that is rivaling the all-time snowfall record set in the winter of 1968-69, many of the region’s lakes are already ice-free which is good news for anglers heading to the region for this year’s trout season fishing opener on April 30.
Crowley Lake, which will be the focal point for many anglers on the April 30 opening day, has been ice-free for over a week. Convict Lake was more than 50 percent ice free early this week, and June Lake, most of Grant Lake, and portions of Gull and Silver Lake are already clear of ice. The Twin Lakes and Bridgeport Reservoir are also already completely ice-free. Warmer weather forecast for the next week and runoff is expected to assure all of these popular opener fishing spots will be ice-free for the opener.
The higher elevation waters in the Bishop Creek drainage, the Rock Creek drainage, above the June Lake Loop, and waters off Tioga Pass will all likely remain ice-covered, which is normal for trout openers -- even in light snowpack years.
In the Bishop area, South Lake has been drained down below the bottom of the dam and Southern California Edison is refacing the dam, so access here will be restricted until June. North Lake and Lake Sabrina are expected to be ice-covered through opening weekend, as normal, but continued warm weather over the next two weeks could change that situation.
The Mammoth Lakes Basin is also expected to remain completely locked in ice for opening weekend, with only the Twin Lakes likely to have any open waters at the dam or below the falls by fishing season opener.
The early ice-out of the popular fishing lakes is a mixed blessing, according to Jim Reid at Ken’s Sporting Goods in Bridgeport. Reid said the fishing for trophy brown trout is always best just after ice-out. Before last opener, it had been several years since a trophy brown was landed from the Upper or Lower Twin Lakes on upper Robinson Creek -- or the whole Eastern Sierra for that matter. But in 2010, there was a 14-pound, 14-ounce brown landed by Dan Stewart of Bishop on Wednesday of the opening week, and then a 16-pound, seven-ounce brown was landed May 30 by Barrett Steward of Yorba Linda. Both huge fish came from Lower Twin.
“It seems like 75 percent of the big fish are caught the first week of the season, but after the lakes have been iced out for two or three weeks, the big browns are hard to reach,” said Reid.
Reid said the browns move up into the warmer shallows right after ice out to feed, but then move back into deep water where they are more difficult to target as the whole lake warms up. Reid accurately predicted last year’s flurry of big fish, noting that one angler who targets the big browns -- Jim Bringhurst of Brownbagger fame -- actually hooked a fish in Lower Twin he estimated was well over 20 pounds, and perhaps even a new state record. That fish escaped at the boat.
“I’m always optimistic about big fish, especially that first week. But it’s been decades since we’ve seen a fish in the 20s. Maybe this will be the year,” said Reid.

Potential line-class world
record white seabass landed
Scott Cringella of Westminster landed a 76.4-pound white seabass fishing a sardine in a boil under a bird school off south Laguna Beach last week. The fish was weighed on a certified scale at the Balboa Angling Club, and if accepted by the International Game Fish Association, it will become a new 20-pound line class world record for the species.
The current all-tackle world record is an 83-pound, 12-ounce fish caught off San Felipe, Mexico in 1953, and the current 20-pound class record is a 74-pound fish landed off San Clemente in 1982.

  • Description:

April 27, 2013 - This pair of 10-pound brown trout was caught by Daniel Perez of Pine Groove from Lower Twin Lake near Bridgeport the opening day of the 2013 trout season. They were two of four browns caught that hit or passed the 10-pound mark from Lower Twin opening day. A 10-pound, 3-ouncer was caught by Jerry Hill of Murphy, and Twin Lakes Resort owner Steve Marti caught a 10-pound, four-ounce fish. This is a good start to the season.
